Important Hot Weather Advice for Pets As Therapy Volunteers ๐พ
With temperatures reaching exceptionally high levels across many parts of the UK, the welfare of our PAT dogs and Cats must come first.
We are therefore recommending that volunteers postpone all Pets As Therapy visits and assessments during the current heatwave, unless they are absolutely confident that both they and their pet can travel and visit safely in cool, air-conditioned conditions.
Even short journeys, warm pavements, increased humidity and unfamiliar environments can place dogs at risk of heat stress or heatstroke. Some dogs may be particularly vulnerable, including older dogs, brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, and those with underlying health conditions.
We know how much your visits mean to the people you support, but we are sure they would agree that the wellbeing of our wonderful therapy animals is paramount.
Please take sensible precautions during this period:
๐ถ Avoid unnecessary travel and exercise during the hottest parts of the day
๐ถ Ensure dogs have constant access to fresh drinking water
๐ถ Never leave dogs in vehicles, even for a short time
๐ถ Watch for signs of overheating, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy or distress
๐ถ Contact your vet immediately if you have any concerns
Thank you for everything you do. We appreciate your understanding and your continued commitment to keeping both our volunteers and PAT dogs safe.
Stay cool and stay safe.
