Not every intense nose is on odour… sometimes it’s on the camera 👃📸

This curiosity is gold in pet scent work.
Curiosity tells us:
• The dog feels secure enough to explore
• The environment isn’t overwhelming
• The dog is confident moving towards novelty

Before we even talk about hides, inaccessible source, suspended odour or handler mechanics, we need this. A dog who wants to gather information.
Rowan’s close up is a lovely reminder that scent work starts long before the search cue. It starts with confidence, emotional safety, and the freedom to explore.

Teaching can be lonely.
Making decisions on your own.
Wondering if you are pitching things right.
Second guessing classes after everyone has gone home.
A lot of instructors do not struggle because they lack skill.
They struggle because they have no one to sense check with.
SIN is not a following where you watch from the sidelines.
It is a network where you talk, ask, reflect, and grow.

Real instructors.
Real conversations.

Clarity comes from pauses, not pressure.
In scent work, silence is information.
Stillness is feedback.
Hesitation is data.
When handlers fill every gap with words, cues, or movement, dogs stop thinking and start guessing.
Fast responses look impressive.
But they often hide uncertainty.
In trailing, this shows up as dogs checking back, drifting wide, or losing commitment because the picture keeps changing.
In detection, it shows up as frantic searching, premature indications, or dogs asking “Is this it?” instead of answering the question themselves.
These are not confidence problems.
They are interruption problems.

Dogs need time to process scent without being managed.
They need permission to pause without consequence.
They need space to solve before we step back in.

Good scent work is not loud.
It is not busy.
It is intentional.

Progress is not how involved the handler looks.
It is how independently the dog can work.

If your session feels chaotic, resist the urge to fix it.
Pause.
Breathe.
Say less.
