I see soooo many people being taken for a walk by there dog, not the other way around 🙈
I hear alot of people say they cant lead train their dog but here is where I see the problem...
The dog is taught that when they feel resistance on a lead to keep pulling, when in fact when they feel resistance they should be learn to stop/ slow down and walk at the owners pace!
You can see in this video with murphy, he does keep thinking about going off to the grass to the left of me to sniff everything but he keeps correcting himself.
( I do stop to let him sniff 'at my control' but for video purpose i didnt here and he passed the test with flying colours 💯)
Tips for lead training your dog
• Instead of taking the dog out to go from A-B and back.
Slow down! The walk should be a training walk. Distance isnt whats important... Repetition is!
• When you start the walk (at the front door), dont let them pull you out of the garden.
Start as you mean to go on. Stop and tell them to wait... The wait helps them to calm that excitement, be calmer and take in their surroundings. Even if you have to wait 5/10 mins before you set off walking.
Time doesnt matter your not going out to reach a destination. Your going out to learn how to walk on lead.
• Walk at a steady pace. Not fast or jogging. A chilled stroll.
As soon as your dog pulls and there is resistance on the lead... Stop.
They need to learn that resistance means the walk stops.
• Reward.
As soon as they turn and walk back to you "YES" and treat.
• REPITION.
This is why you are not trying reach a destination, your repeating these steps until the dog gets it.
You might think "but my dog needs their exercise", let me tell you, these steps are mental exercise for your dog... Your dog will be tired from trying to remember and correct themselves.
• Result.
More safe, control and enjoyable walk for you and your dog and a much stronger relationship.
Dog too strong for you to handle?
Change to a figure of 8 lead to do the training.
Well done to Murphy❤️
and massive welldone to his parents who have worked so hard with him.
