🌙🐾 Have you noticed the evenings are getting darker ??? …

As autumn settles in & the nights start drawing in, it’s a good time to think about how the changing light can affect our pets.

🌟 Be visible on walks
Consider reflective collars, leads, harnesses & high-visibility clothing, & carry a torch when walking in low light. This helps you & your dog, or cat!, stay visible to other pedestrians, cyclists & motorists.

🐕 Take extra care near roads
Reduced visibility means it is harder for drivers to spot pets, so keeping dogs on a short lead near roads & in poorly lit areas can help keep them safe.

🐈 Remember our cats
Cats can be harder to see after dark. Reflective or high-visibility collars with a quick-release safety feature can help make them more visible.

🍂 Watch out for seasonal hazards
Darker evenings often mean walking at different times & in different conditions. Take care around slippery paths, fallen leaves, standing water & unfamiliar areas.

And don't forget to dry off & clean paws, & provide a warm, cosy bed, & plenty of cuddles when everyone gets back from their evening adventures 🐾❤️😆👌

Stay safe, stay visible & enjoy those crisp autumn walks! 🍂🌙

💜 Patient Spotlight - Oscar 💜

The beautiful gentle soul that is Oscar, visited us recently for a nail clip, and his increased bravery was noticed, as well as his weight loss - and we think his weight-loss journey is too good not to share! 😆🐶

Oscar is a gorgeous chocolate long-haired Dachshund who has worked incredibly hard with his family to achieve a healthier body weight.

As a breed, Dachshunds are particularly prone to weight-related health problems, and maintaining an appropriate body condition is especially important for supporting long-term musculoskeletal and spinal health, as well as overall health of course.

Oscar’s journey has been a little more challenging because exercise has been difficult for him... Having experienced negative interactions from other dogs when he was younger bless him 🥹 Oscar developed significant anxiety around other dogs, and found walks scary and stressful. He also much prefers staying clean and dry, so exercise in wet or muddy weather is definitely not his favourite activity! 🙈💜

So Oscars family decided to focus on the aspect of weight management they could control most effectively - his diet... His portions were carefully reduced and his daily calorie intake closely monitored. He is fed twice daily 👌, receives no table scraps or titbits, and has one small treat at bedtime. Much to Oscar's Human Mums delight, the whole family have become involved in Oscars weight-management plan.

Through consistency and careful portion control, Oscar has lost 2kgs, and is now back within a healthy weight range 🐶👌🥳🙌👏

His family have also noticed some lovely benefits too - Oscar has regained a defined waist, has plenty of energy, and his coat is looking fantastic, and we think he's also going to score some extra good boy points at his next visit with the Vet! 😆💜🐶

Oscar is a wonderful example of how successful weight management isn't simply about increasing exercise. Every pet is an individual, and an effective weight-loss plan needs to take into account their breed, lifestyle, behaviour, exercise tolerance and diet.

Oscar loves life with his two much larger Ragdoll/Maine Coon-cross "brothers"! His family think Oscar may be a Dachshund "running on cat software"! 🐱🐶

Well done, Oscar and family - what an absolutely fantastic achievement! 👏💜🐶 & Thankyou for sharing his story with us all - We are certain Oscar will be an inspiration to others 💜🐶

💙 Mental health matters just as much as physical health. 💙

It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. It’s okay to take a step back, ask for help, rest, and put yourself first. You don’t have to be strong every single day, and you don’t have to face everything alone.

For many of us, our pets are an incredibly important part of our mental wellbeing. They offer companionship when we feel lonely, comfort when life feels difficult, routine when everything feels overwhelming, and a reason to get up, get outside and keep going. Sometimes, simply having a furry friend beside us can make a difficult day feel a little easier. They remind us that we are loved and needed.

Let’s create a world where everyone feels heard, understood and supported. Your mental health matters. Your feelings are valid. You deserve kindness, support and peace.

Be gentle with yourself, and remember that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Brighter days are possible.

✨🦷 Patient Spotlight – A Dental Superstar! 🦷✨

This gorgeous boy was an absolute star for his recent scale and polish with Kate and Cathy! 🐶💙

Just like us visiting the dental hygienist, professional dental cleaning is an important part of maintaining good oral health. Our before and after photos show the difference a professional scale and polish can make, removing accumulated plaque and calculus and leaving his teeth beautifully clean. 🪥✨

Even better, his owner has an excellent home-care routine, with his teeth being brushed every day. Daily tooth brushing is one of the most effective ways to help control plaque accumulation and maintain healthy teeth and gums between veterinary dental checks.

🦷 Think of it like our own dental care:
A combination of daily tooth brushing, regular veterinary dental checks and professional dental cleaning when indicated can make a real difference to your pet’s long-term oral health and overall wellbeing.

We also think this gorgeous boy thoroughly enjoyed his visit - his tail did not stop wagging and he was very keen to request plenty of belly rubs! The entire team fell in love with him! 🙈😂💙

Well done, handsome boy - what a dental superstar and an absolute bundle of joy you are! 💙🦷✨

You don’t have to be a black cat to enjoy Halloween! 😸🧡🎃 ... All cats over 7 years of age can receive a blood pressure check for 50% off our regular price (which is usually £37) and enter our prize draw for a Halloween treat 🥳😸🧡🎃

Did you know a simple blood pressure check could help protect your cat’s eyes, brain, heart and kidneys?

High blood pressure is particularly common in older cats and is frequently associated with conditions such as chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism.

🤔 Why does it matter?

Persistently high blood pressure can damage vital organs, including:

👁️ Eyes – bleeding or retinal detachment can cause sudden blindness
🧠 Brain – neurological signs such as confusion, weakness or seizures may occur
❤️ Heart – the heart has to work harder, potentially leading to changes in the heart muscle
🫘 Kidneys – hypertension can contribute to further kidney damage

🚩 What are the signs/symptoms?

Often called the silent disease, high blood pressure may show no early symptoms until it causes sudden and severe damage to body systems including;

🚨Sudden or progressive loss of vision
🚨Dilated pupils or unusual-looking eyes
🚨Disorientation or changes in behaviour
🚨Weakness or difficulty walking
🚨Seizures in severe cases
🚨Sudden blindness (which should always be treated as urgent)

🩺 How is it diagnosed?

Blood pressure can be measured at your veterinary practice using specialised equipment. Because stress can temporarily increase a cat's blood pressure, your vet may take several readings and assess the results alongside your cat's overall health.

🩺 The good news?

Feline hypertension can often be successfully managed with medication and regular monitoring.

If your cat is getting older, has kidney disease or hyperthyroidism, ask your veterinary team whether regular blood pressure checks are appropriate.

FYI; the cats pictured are in fact real, and not AI, just incase you were wondering.

Happy Caturday everyone! 😸💖
