Staying dry? ..
Three indoor gundog training games designed to build impulse control, directional focus, and steadiness without relying on food searches or scent-tracking.

The Placeboard Grid
This game uses spatial boundaries to sharpen directional handling and mental patience in a confined indoor space.
Place two or three placeboards (or mats) in a staggered pattern across a room or hallway.
Place the dog in a steady stay on the home board.
Using a silent hand signal or a directional verbal cue, send the dog to a secondary board.
Once the dog establishes all four paws on the target board, they must hold a stationary pause (building self-regulation) until you release them.Instead of food, the reward for a clean transition is a thrown dummy, a toy play session, or a release to a high-value environmental reward.

Toy Handover (Inhibitory Control & Delivery Proofing)
Work in a narrow hallway or a quiet, distraction-free room holding two identical dummies or fetch toys.
Send the dog for a short, straightforward retrieve of the first dummy.
As he dog returns, keep your body completely still. The dog must deliver straight to hand without jumping, snatching, or dropping prematurely.
The moment the first dummy is cleanly handed over, immediately present the second toy as a stationary "stay" test, the dog must remain steady and calm rather than lunging for the next item.
Release the dog for the second retrieve only when stillness is achieved.
This reinforces that calm composure is the key that unlocks the next retrieve.

Indoor Blind Memory Line (Focus & Line-Holding)
This exercise develops straight-line memory tracking and patience without the aid of scent cones or food trails.
- Choose a long, clear indoor corridor or open floor space. Place a single dummy upright or visible at the far end while the dog watches, or place it out of sight as a pure memory mark.
- Heel the dog away from the dummy down the corridor, executing a sudden halt or an about-turn to test mental adherence.
Turn the dog back to face the line of the dummy, ensuring they settle into a steady, un-fidgety sit.
Release the dog with a direct line command to execute the retrieve in a straight path, preventing side-drifting or scanning behaviours.

We are heading out for some park work again today ..
Keeping training simple when it really counts is something we maybe don't talk about enough.
It’s completely natural to want to level up, to add distance, throw in heavy distractions, raise the difficulty bar, and keep pushing forward.
That’s how progress happens, right?

But there is immense value in keeping things easy, familiar, and achievable, especially when your dog needs a genuine injection of confidence and joy.
When a dog truly knows a task inside and out, the game shifts. It stops being a test of compliance and transforms into an opportunity for self-assured achievement.

Why slow and steady wins
Clarity breeds confidence, so when the criteria are crystal clear, the mental load drops. Your dog isn't guessing what you want, they can predict it .. they can sink into the mechanics of a familiar exercise and do it brilliantly.
& true satisfaction often lives in the rhythm of the known.
Dropping back to an easier level lets your dog experience that effortless state of flow where everything clicks and they feel like an absolute superstar.

Every successful, low-pressure repetition builds emotional resilience and strengthens the bond between you.. (show them the same delight as you did the first time they achieved that task) It reminds them that working with you feels good, safe, and immensely rewarding.
Pushing boundaries is necessary for growth, but staying in the comfort zone of a mastered task has its own quiet magic. Sometimes, the best way forward is to slow right down, let your dog bask in the joy of knowing they've got this, and celebrate the steady, unhurried progress.

It’s easy to look at social media and feel like everyone else is miles ahead, running a polished reel of flawless retrieves and picture-perfect steadiness.
What you don’t see are the hundreds of messy sessions, dropped dummies, broken stays, and quiet resets that never made the cut.

Every handler with a finished, responsive working dog started right where you are now. The secret isn't some hidden talent, it's just stubborn consistency.
They kept doing the unglamorous reps, until the penny finally dropped for both of them.

Excellence isn't built in one long, frustrating weekend... It’s built in the boring, everyday moments. Ten minutes of clear, fair, focused work a few times a week will always beat an hour of grinding away until everyone is exhausted.

We see that a lot of beginners find it awkward to get out with equipment to somewhere that is suitable and too over stimulating. You'll see that much of our foundation work is therefore designed for building the skills in your own garden where you can keep going with the reps that nobody else sees...
That's where the real progress happens.

As a bonus it is also easier to grab five minutes a few times a day when it's convenient.

Freedom to be off leash comes from having a dog that self-controls and has reliable skills.

Bred to cover ground and to hunt scent, investigate sights, and sounds ..these little missiles also have strong social drives.

Gundog training is drive control.. its direction & distance control, the ability and desire to move or come back when called. It's close control - to come into heel when directed to.
It's not just control over prey drive but also social skills - To ignore and leave other dogs and people alone, to have manners not to "see it-grab it"
It is Steadines, being connected to you around distractions, whilst remaining in touch with and aware of the environment
It's having and displaying the ability to follow instructions over instinct.
Coming away from and/or ignoring wild fowl, wildlife and livestock.
It starts with clear and trusting relationship skills - interaction and focus to be and work alongside of you not just check in with you while doing their own thing.

A trustworthy dog with these reliable skills can safely enjoy so many more opportunities in life.
