As the temperature drops through the winter months, the UK’s largest vet charity PDSA is warning owners to take extra care of their four-legged friends.

The winter season isn’t always the most pleasant for our pets - take extra care when outdoors and watch out for common winter hazards such as salt and grit on roads which can irritate pets paws, snowy paws whereby clumps of snow can gather on hair between the pads on their toes and the ingestion of antifreeze which is incredibly toxic and can be fatal.

During the Second World War, incredible bravery was not only displayed by those who fought for everyone’s freedom but also by animals on active duty on the Home front.

This was recognised by our founder Maria Dickin CBE after being inspired by the animals’ devotion to man and duty. She introduced a special medal specifically for animals in war.

Today we at Cardiff PDSA would like to show our respect to not only those who fought for our freedom but to the animals who fought alongside them.

The bright flashes and loud bangs of fireworks can be exciting and fun for us, but for our cats, they can be confusing and frightening 😿

It’s difficult for them to understand that they aren’t in danger when they hear or see them, and since their senses are much better than ours, they experience fireworks more intensely than we do!

Here are our top tips to help your feline friend feel happy and safe during fireworks season, proudly supported by Ever Clean UK 🎆

[Visual description: An infographic explaining how to keep your cat calm during fireworks. There is a picture of a grey stripy animated cat in the middle of the picture, with gold sparks surrounding it. Points around the cat include: Get them inside well before dark and make sure all windows and cat flaps are shut/locked so they can’t get back out. Don’t pick up cats or restrain them if they are scared: cats prefer to control how they cope. Close your curtains before it gets dark and leave the lights on to hide the flashes. Try to stick to normal routines and behave normally. But if it helps, distract them with something fun to do. Make them a den to hide in if they wish. Provide a litter tray nearby. Comfort them if they come to you for reassurance, don’t ignore them. Give them a litter tray near their den. Even if they normally toilet outside, provide a litter tray inside. If you have more than one cat, give them a tray each plus a spare. Never punish them for anything they do when they’re scared. Play music to drown out the noises from fireworks. Keep them calm with pheromone diffusers. Try not to confine them to one room.]

We’d like to thank everyone for the donations of clothes, towels and bedding that we get on a regular basis. On our last set of donations we did have someone accidentally donate us a brand new pair of shoes. If these are yours we have kept them safe can you please come back to claim them. If no one claims them they will be donated to the PDSA shop.

We would just like to thank Mrs Julie Murphy for her wonderful donation to our hospital; Mrs Murphy hosted a fundraising event at her local labour club and managed to raise a staggering amount which she very kindly donated to us.

We as a charity receive no government funding and its costs over £80 million a year to run our 49 Pet hospitals across the country. So fundraising events such as this really do make a difference to how we can treat those pets in need.

Our phones lines have been affected aswell, unfortunately we have a limited number of staff monitoring the social media so aren’t able to consistently monitor it and respond to emergencies through it so we at the hospital would like to ask if you still need to be seen and it’s an emergency contact us via the PDSA webform
