Yesterday I said goodbye to my Beautiful girl Luna ๐พ๐ 14 years of love, licks and emotional support.
As a veterinary nurse, Iโve sat beside so many families as they make the incredibly difficult decision to let their beloved pet go. Iโve held paws, dried tears, explained what happens, and tried to make those final moments as peaceful and gentle as possible.
But yesterday, I was the pet owner.
And I was reminded of something that, despite knowing it professionally, you can never truly prepare yourself for: knowing that euthanasia is the kindest decision doesnโt make it an easy one.
Grief is such a strange thing. There is relief that they are no longer suffering, but also heartbreak that they are no longer here. There can be guilt, even when you know you did the right thing. There are moments where you feel okay, and then something completely ordinaryโa favourite spot, a toy, the sound of their nameโcan bring everything rushing back.
I think sometimes, as pet owners, we put pressure on ourselves to โbe okayโ because we knew it was coming, or because we know we made the right decision.
But knowing it was the right decision and being devastated by it can exist at exactly the same time.
So, if youโve recently lost a pet, please be kind to yourself. Your grief is not silly or excessive. You havenโt โjust lost a dogโ or โjust lost a catโ. Youโve lost a member of your family, a companion, a part of your everyday life.
And to all of my clients who have ever trusted me to be there with you during those heartbreaking momentsโthank you. I understand what it feels like to be the person sitting on the other side of the table.
There is no right way to grieve, and there is certainly no timeline.
Just take it one day at a time. ๐ค
For all the pets who were loved enough to be missed this much. ๐พ
