Valley Exotics is a dedicated veterinary service for exotic pets, based at Valley Veterinary Hospital in Cardiff.

We are a first opinion and referral service for avian/exotic species with state... Valley Exotics, part of Valley Veterinary Hospital in Cardiff, is a dedicated veterinary service for exotic pets. Exotics in the veterinary profession includes anything which is not a cat/dog/horse/farm animal and includes Birds (inc. parrots, birds of prey, backyard poultry), Small Mammals (Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Chinchillas, Small Primates, Rats etc) and Reptiles (Snakes, Lizards, Tortoises, Turtles etc). We have a purpose built department inside the hospital for these species, with dedicated wards, operating theatre, preparation area and isolation area. We have advanced clinical equipment at our disposal, including a CT scanner. We accept 1st opinion cases and referrals from other vets.

This beautiful green iguana is Flo. She has been with us today for a complex surgical procedure, to remove a large mass from on top of her spine. Our exotics vets Tariq and Aimie removed the mass, with the anaesthesia and nursing care before and after being handled by RVNs Gabby and Lauren.

She has been discharged and is recovering well. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a swift recovery!!!

This beautiful red eyed tree frog is called Ella, he was in today for a check up. We’re hoping there is nothing too serious going on, the owner is going to pop in some faeces for us to have a look as a next step.

Some people don’t realise that amphibians can come to the vets, but we see a fair few frogs, toads and axolotls here and we really enjoy seeing amphibians!! 🐸

This beautiful grey parrot is Maverick. He escaped from home recently and was recaptured after several days. When he returned, he had a large tick on his head. His owners were concerned as he’d developed a lot of bruising around his eyes and had a blood blister under his lower beak. He was also very lethargic.

Avian tick borne syndrome is caused by a tick called Ixodes frontalis and is believed to happen as a result of toxins from the saliva of the tick. We mainly see weakness and haemorrhages under the skin. It can sadly be fatal.

Luckily, with treatment, about 75% of birds seem to make a good recovery. If ever a bird has a tick, either because they’ve been out, or perhaps they live outside in an aviary - we would recommend seeking prompt attention from an avian veterinarian

Maverick is not totally out of the woods, but is doing much better. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a full recovery!!! 🤞

Maud the chicken was referred to us from a local practice, after being attacked by an aggressive cockerel at the weekend. She had a significant skin and soft tissue defect over the back of her head with exposure of her skull.

Our avian specialist Tariq performed surgery to debride the wound initially, then advanced a flap of skin from lower down her neck, to repair it. The anaesthetic was monitored closely by our senior exotics nurse Lauren - but it was all very smooth.

Everything has gone very well and she has recovered well from surgery. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that she makes a full recovery from here!!! 🐓 🐔

Echo the budgie has been in today to have a large mass removed from her back. Surgery can be high risk for budgies, but so far so good. We’ve sent the mass away for histological analysis. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for good news 🙂 Pictured here all recovered after surgery!!

Our exotics vet Aimie has been making friends with Bubbles, a stunning, friendly little budgie today!!

Bubbles has some mild issues affecting her feet, but nothing that shouldn’t resolve thankfully. Hopefully by changing the perches in the enclosure, things may get better. We recommend natural branches as perches, which ensure that weight is divided over the pads on the feet over time - rather than a uniform perch, where the weight is always born on the same parts of the feet.

Aimie has been with us for a number of weeks now, has settled right in and is already amassing a lot of knowledge and skills! She’s been seeing a huge variety of cases with specialist supervision. Aimie is quickly becoming one of South Wales’ leading exotics vets! You may see her at an appointment here soon 🙂
