We are a first opinion and referral service for avian/exotic species with state... Valley Exotics, part of Valley Veterinary Hospital in Cardiff, is a dedicated veterinary service for exotic pets. Exotics in the veterinary profession includes anything which is not a cat/dog/horse/farm animal and includes Birds (inc. parrots, birds of prey, backyard poultry), Small Mammals (Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Ch

inchillas, Small Primates, Rats etc) and Reptiles (Snakes, Lizards, Tortoises, Turtles etc). We have a purpose built department inside the hospital for these species, with dedicated wards, operating theatre, preparation area and isolation area. We have advanced clinical equipment at our disposal, including a CT scanner. We accept 1st opinion cases and referrals from other vets.

Thistle the African hedgehog was in today for some dental treatment! She’s got some quite severe gingivitis, which we are treating medically. She’s had a descale of all her teeth today. Hopefully we can calm things down. Pictured here in a recovery kennel after the procedure, one of our nurses is tempting her with some Emeraid Carnivore - which she was taking well 🙂

Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a swift recovery! We love seeing Pygmy hedgehogs here !

We have had a busy day! Tegu, Axolotl, Chicken, Parrots, Rabbit, Rat, Royal Python etc etc.

We are just discharging Tails - who was in today for his neuter. Sugar gliders are always interesting patients and we love seeing them here at Valley Exotics!

We apologise to everyone for the delays today, there were a lot of emergencies.

Before and after! Colin the cockatiel was recently rehomed by Lauren, our senior exotics nurse, from a local rescue.

When he arrived - he had plucked his entire breast.

With an aviary to fly in, a good nutritious diet and some cockatiel companions, he seems much happier. His feathers have now all grown back 🙂

During this time, our clients will be supported by the wonderful team at Caerphilly Vet Clinic. If you have an urgent query, please call our usual number — 02920 001454 — and hold to be transferred to a member of their team. They will take your details and liaise directly with us regarding the most appropriate next steps. Following triage, we will contact you to arrange a suitable appointment at Valley Veterinary Hospital with an exotics specialist if required.

This beautiful lesser sulphur crested cockatoo came in to see us this week for some routine wellness bloods and a beak/nail trim. Pictured with Gabby, one of the RVNs that rotates through our avian & exotics department here. Gabby loves avian nursing! Look at that beautiful yellow crest!!!

We had some resistance from a patient today, Rolo the Derbyan parakeet was not impressed at having to see the vet - but we were able to talk her into it being a good idea and her check up was eventually a success 🙂 🦜

Look how good Skye is at the vets!!
Skye is a budgie between 7 and 8 years old with many health issues including:

- Diabetes mellitus
- A misshapen clavicle due to a previous fracture
- Chronic liver disease
- Chronic high cholesterol

Despite all of this, he’s doing really well!
He takes a few meds at home every day, but his owner does a great job with him and has bought him lots of additional life 😁

As you can see, he’s very amenable for examinations. We love treating budgies here at Valley Exotics!
