I really think everyone should practice their ‘moves’ rather than wait until the care is needed.

In the early days I remember clipping dry pasta daily, so that Lily and I could work on a nail clipping routine. Her racing trainer clipped her nails until Lily was happy for me to take over, we were so lucky to have that hand over.

We’ve since moved onto a grinder as my eyesight has deteriorated with age….. and it’s important to me that I’m the one who offers this care.

Every day is a teaching day 🤓

So, what did the teacher (that’s me!) learn today?

Well… quite a lot, actually! 😂

I learnt that when I use a client’s lead instead of my own, I’m uncomfortable. That tiny change makes a HUGE difference.

I noticed Daisy started pulling dreadfully. I was unconsciously pulling back too, because the lead was uncomfortable in my hand before it even became uncomfortable for her. In doing that, I was taking away the space she needed to move her feet, explore and, importantly, just be a busy puppy.

So I swapped to a longer, softer lead.

What a difference.

Daisy had more room to move, and my hand was comfortable. That meant I relaxed too — my whole demeanour changed.

And suddenly, the walk became 100% more enjoyable for both of us. ❤️

It’s such a good reminder that sometimes what looks like a “dog problem” can actually be a tiny piece of equipment, our own body language, or the way we’re holding ourselves.

Comfort creates space. Space creates choice. And choice can change everything.

Another lesson learnt by the teacher today! 🤓🐾
