K9 Solutions K9 Solutions is a successful training and behaviour practice. Established 2003 Whatever your issue or problem, we can help!

We provide a wide range of training and dog behavioral services to suit you and your pet. We offer both group and one-to-one sessions on:

- Basic and advanced obedience
- Socialisation training for puppies
- Sessions tailored for the needs of dogs with behavioral issues
- Classes for children and their dogs
- And much more! Owning a dog should be an enjoyable experience for both you and your pet but if things aren't going right it can be a nightmare. We will show you how to build a strong and rewarding bond with your dog that will be based on trust, understanding and compassion. Chewing, aggression, recall and other problems are very common and in most cases making changes to the dog-human relationship will fix the issues. Getting to the root of the problem is a behaviourists job, we observe, act, educate and guide you in how to address the issues and fix them. We have many years experience of working with owners and their pets to provide quick and workable solutions to these problems. Simply get in touch with us and we would be happy to advise you on the most appropriate solution to your dog's issue.

I chat to my dogs all the time. I probably have entire conversations with them that are completely one-sided. But when I actually need them to understand something, I don't have a conversation with them, I use a clear tone and focus on the dog.

One of the most valuable training tools we have is our voice, yet I think it's one of the things we use least effectively.

Dogs don't need a negotiation.

"Come on, can you get down please? You know you're not supposed to be up there..."

Somewhere amongst all those words is supposedly an instruction. But which bit does the dog understand?

My cues are short and clear. The tone matters too.

If my dogs are doing something I don't want, I don't repeatedly say "no". I use a short "ah" as an interrupter – *stop what you're doing and listen to me* – and then I give them a clear cue for something they CAN do.

Because simply telling a dog not to do something doesn't tell them what you'd like instead.

And praise sounds completely different again.

It's happy. It's enthusiastic. I smile when I say it. My whole demeanour tells the dog, "YES! That's exactly what I wanted."

The words we use matter, but HOW we use our voice matters just as much.

Chat to your dog. I certainly do.

But when you need to communicate something important, make sure your dog can tell the difference between conversation, information and a cue that actually means something.

Clear communication makes life easier at both ends of the lead.

GRASS SEEDS!!

They are troublesome enough during a normal summer but this year with the heat and the drought they are proving even more problematic for many dog owners.
Sue's own dog, Myka, has had to have 2 removed under sedation in the last month.
Snoods are an option and there are several out there to choose from and then you need to make sure your dog is happy to wear it, there would be no point putting it on a dog that is then going to continually rub its head along the ground trying to get it off.
Myka is not a fan (as you can see from the photos) but Sue is working on a conditioning plan to get her used to it. In the house and garden, on and off during walks and she is gradually getting happier with it.
Some dogs will not be phased at all like Luther, Sue's other spaniel and Izzie's Clumber, who is sporting a different type.
Do you use a snood?
What type do you prefer?
