🐾 **Is your Sphynx really a pedigree? And why do registration papers matter?**

When buying a Sphynx kitten, one important question you can ask is **"Will my kitten come with pedigree registration papers?"**

Sadly, many backyard breeders breed from cats that were originally registered as **"Not for Breeding"**.

But what does that actually mean, and why should you care?

A cat may have been restricted from breeding by its original breeder for several reasons:

🐾 It may not have the desirable characteristics of the breed standard.

🐾 There may be concerns about hereditary health conditions or genetics.

🐾 Its pedigree may make it unsuitable for certain breeding combinations.

🐾 It may simply have been sold as a much-loved pet, rather than a breeding cat.

**Ethical breeders respect these restrictions.** At Gotham City Cats, our kittens leave spayed or neutered, ensuring they cannot be exploited for breeding.

Unfortunately, some less responsible breeders ignore these restrictions and breed from cats that were never intended to reproduce. Their kittens may then be sold without papers, and the cycle continues.

**So why does a pedigree matter?**

A pedigree is much more than a piece of paper. It provides a documented family history, allowing breeders to trace generations of ancestors, identify familial relationships and make informed decisions about genetic diversity.

Without a verified pedigree, there is no reliable way to prove a kitten's ancestry or even establish that it is genuinely purebred.

**What about overbreeding?**

Recognised cat registries also have breeding rules and welfare standards. For example, the GCCF limits queens to three litters in 24 months, helping protect them from being bred excessively.

Registration records also provide traceability, something particularly important when monitoring inherited health conditions and managing inbreeding.

**Does registration guarantee a healthy kitten?**

No! Registration alone is not proof of ethical breeding. Health testing, HCM heart screening, proper veterinary care and responsible breeding decisions are equally important.

❤️ **At Gotham City Cats, we believe breeding should be about protecting and improving the Sphynx breed, not simply producing more kittens.**

All our kittens are TICA registered, with documented pedigrees, and come from carefully selected, HCM-screened parents.

**When you buy a pedigree kitten, don't just pay for the Sphynx appearance. Ask for the paperwork, ask about the parents and ask about their health.**

Why do we weigh our kittens every day? 🐾

Because when they are this tiny, weight is one of the best ways to know they are feeding well and thriving.

Without weighing, how do you really know a newborn kitten is getting enough milk?

It also helps us spot problems early, sometimes before there are any obvious signs.

And yes, we handle our kittens from birth. It’s a myth that a mother cat will reject or harm her kittens because humans have touched them.

Our girls trust us completely and often even seek us out when they are in labour because they want us close by.

Those tiny daily weigh-ins are a really important part of giving every kitten the best possible start. ❤️

They've moved from the nursery to the lounge today. She quite a protective mama so it could be a tense week while she sets her boundaries with the other cats.
We find growing up around household bustle and having interaction with the other adult cats helps our kittens confidence grow. It'll be slow introductions while they settle.

At Gotham City Cats, exceptional care begins long before our kittens leave for their new homes.

While in our care, each kitten is seen by our vet approximately 4-5 times, allowing us to closely monitor their growth, development and overall health at every stage.

These regular health checks form an important part of our commitment to responsible, ethical breeding and ensure our kittens are given the very best start in life.

Every kitten also leaves us with a health guarantee, giving their new family added reassurance and confidence.

For us, producing beautiful kittens is only part of the story. Their health, wellbeing and future always come first.

🐾 **How Our Waiting List, Shortlist & Reservation Process Works** 🐾

At Gotham City Cats, we want our reservation process to be fair, transparent and stress-free for everyone, with the health and welfare of our kittens always coming first.

Here's how it works!

🐱 **Step 1 - The Waiting List**

Anyone interested in welcoming a Gotham City Cats kitten into their family can join our waiting list. Those on this list are always given priority when kittens become available.

🐱 **Step 2 - The Shortlist**

Once a litter arrives, we create a shortlist based on the number of kittens available.

**Our shortlist will NEVER exceed the number of kittens in the litter.** So if we have four kittens, we will only invite four families onto the shortlist.

Families on our waiting list get first refusal to join.

🐱 **Step 3 - Health Checks, Visits & Reservations**

Our kittens' health and welfare will always be our first priority.

We wait until our kittens have had their first veterinary health check before inviting shortlisted families to visit, meet the kittens and reserve their chosen kitten with a deposit.

This is particularly important to us because we believe in **complete honesty and transparency about every kitten's health.** If a kitten has any health concerns, additional needs or requires special care, we want prospective families to be fully informed before making a commitment.

We believe every kitten deserves a loving home that understands and can meet their individual needs.

🐱 **Step 4 - Any Remaining Kittens**

If any kittens remain available after our shortlisted families have visited, they are offered to those on our waiting list **before being advertised publicly**.

❤️ **Why do we do it this way?**

We don't believe in taking endless reservations, promising the same kitten to multiple families or accepting deposits before we've had the opportunity to assess our kittens' health.

Our system is designed to be fair, avoid unnecessary disappointment and give families the confidence that they know exactly what they're committing to.

**At Gotham City Cats, the health, welfare and future happiness of our kittens will always come before a sale.**

If you'd like to be considered for a future litter, you're very welcome to contact us about joining our waiting list. ❤️

HCM, or Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, is a condition where the heart muscle becomes abnormally thickened, making it harder for the heart to work properly.

Sphynx are considered a higher-risk breed, particularly where cats are bred without proper health screening or consideration of family history.

This is why ethical breeding matters. Responsible breeders invest in regular HCM heart scans, carefully select breeding cats and put long-term health ahead of producing kittens.

A kitten from an ethical breeder may cost more, but that price reflects the health testing, veterinary care and responsible breeding behind them.

When choosing a Sphynx, don’t just ask how much the kitten costs. Ask what has been invested in their health.

Why Gotham City Cats DOES NOT support Elf, Dwelf or Bambino breeding.

This may be controversial, but as ethical Sphynx breeders, we believe it's important to speak up about practices that compromise animal welfare.

Firstly, Elf, Dwelf and Bambino cats are NOT pedigree Sphynx. They are designer crossbreeds, not recognised by TICA as established pedigree breeds.

They have been selectively bred to produce exaggerated physical characteristics, often at the expense of their health and wellbeing.

🐱 ELF - Curled ears

Created by crossing Sphynx with American Curl cats to produce their distinctive backwards-curled ears.

Potential concerns include:

- Narrow or restricted ear canals, making cleaning more difficult.
- Increased wax accumulation and risk of ear infections.
- Delicate, altered ear cartilage that can be damaged through incorrect handling or cleaning.

🐱 BAMBINO - Short legs

Created by crossing Sphynx with Munchkin cats, deliberately introducing the dwarfism gene.

Potential problems include:

- Abnormal bone and joint development.
- Painful arthritis and musculoskeletal problems.
- Increased risk of spinal issues.
- Restricted mobility, affecting their ability to jump, climb and behave naturally.

🐱 DWELF - The combination of BOTH

Perhaps the most concerning of all.

Dwelf cats have been deliberately bred to combine the curled ears of an Elf with the shortened legs of a Bambino.

This means they can inherit health and welfare concerns associated with BOTH physical characteristics.

Just because we CAN breed a cat to look a certain way doesn't mean we SHOULD.

At Gotham City Cats, we believe ethical breeding should be about protecting and improving the Sphynx breed, not creating increasingly extreme appearances to satisfy trends or command higher prices.

As they aren't a recognised breed, their genealogy cannot be established through their pedigree, as such it makes it more difficult to follow health trends in their offspring.

We don't blame or judge anyone who already owns and loves one of these cats. They deserve every bit as much love and care as any other cat.

But we oppose deliberately breeding genetic characteristics that may compromise an animal's quality of life.

Gotham City Cats - Preservation, not modification.

The 'Bully Cat' trend and extreme wrinkles are also concerning, but we'll leave that for another post.
