Just another bit of training.....

I really enjoyed this course, with some fantastic inputs from the brilliant Dr Sue Dyson, all about lameness and how to spot those very subtle signs that can so easily be missed. 🐴🔎

A lot of the content was covered in detail during my Level 5 Diploma in Equine Podiatry, but there’s something about hearing different perspectives on familiar topics that makes the grey matter work a little harder! 🧠😂

And that can only be a good thing when it comes to continuing to learn and improve the care I provide to my clients and their horses.

Always learning, always questioning, and always looking to do better. 🐴✨

🍂 Is your horse or donkey due a PPID check? 🐴🫏

September and October are a great time to think about PPID (Cushing’s) testing (or re-testing).

At this time of year, horses and donkeys naturally have a seasonal rise in ACTH — the hormone measured when screening for PPID. This rise peaks around late September/early October.

This means autumn testing can help identify horses and donkeys with PPID, including those showing only subtle signs.

👀 Things to look out for include:

🫏 delayed or abnormal coat shedding
🐴 muscle loss or weight changes
🫏 increased drinking or urination
🐴 repeated laminitis or increased hoof discomfort
🫏 a change in attitude or performance

💉 The Liphook Equine Hospital's free PPID testing scheme makes this an ideal time to speak to your vet about testing if you have concerns.

If your horse or donkey is already medicated for PPID then this could also be a good time to ensure the medication levels are sufficient.

Early diagnosis means you can discuss appropriate management and treatment with your vet and help your horse or donkey stay healthier for longer. ❤️ You can find out brilliant information on The Laminitis Site pages to keep you fully informed!

🍂 Autumn tapeworm testing now in stock! 🐴

A big thank you to everyone who got in touch to pre-order your EquiSal saliva test kits. ❤️

I have a few extra kits available for anyone wanting to do both a tapeworm saliva test + faecal egg count — the recommended testing duo for September–November.

Message me if you’d like to get yours sorted! 🐴💩🦠

An interesting weekend trimming, as always! 🐴🫏

Sometimes everything just falls into place — happy horses, happy owners and feet looking fantastic. ❤️

Other times, every visit starts with an “Oh wow…” 😳 as we begin to decipher the mystery that often surrounds the horse!

No two horses or donkeys are ever the same, and that’s what makes this job so interesting. There’s always something to learn, investigate and work through — and I wouldn’t have it any other way! 🐴🩷

🦠 THRUSH – WHAT IS IT?

Thrush is something that affects many horses’ feet, but did you know the active infection isn’t actually black?

Thrush is caused by bacteria called Fusobacterium necrophorum, which thrives in areas with little or no oxygen — such as deep collateral grooves and between the folds of the frog.

It’s often recognised by a nasty smell and black material on the frog. However, active thrush is actually white and powdery. It only turns black once exposed to air.

In small amounts, these bacteria can play a role in natural frog exfoliation, but when they multiply, they can damage the frog, cause pain and potentially contribute to lameness.

Regularly picking out your horse’s feet helps keep these areas clean and exposed to air. 🐴

📸 This photo shows active, white thrush that I trimmed away from the underside of a frog.

I like to finish by applying Field Paste to help support a healthy frog and tackle any remaining bacteria. 💪

🍂 Autumn Tapeworm Testing – Who Would Be Interested?

I’m now able to offer the Equisal Tapeworm Saliva Test as part of my worm counting package! 🐴

This follows feedback from many of you who routinely carry out a tapeworm test in spring and autumn, in line with current guidance.

As a small local business, I need to have an approximate idea of how many kits to order for autumn, so I’d love to know who would be interested.

💷 £22 per kit, including:
• Full Equisal test kit
• Postage to Equisal
• Laboratory testing
• Results
• Recommendations

This is cheaper than other suppliers, while being the exact same kit and testing process. Equisal carry out the testing regardless of where the kit was purchased, so you receive the same results and recommendations.

👉 If you would like me to order you an Equisal kit for autumn, please comment below or send me a message.

Once I have an idea of numbers, I’ll place a bulk order. Thank you! 💚🐴

🐴👣 Hoof Boot Fittings

Last weekend I carried out some hoof boot fittings in Ayrshire and Renfrewshire.

I met some lovely horses who were recently out of shoes, as well as some long-term barefoot horses with metabolic issues. All would benefit from the extra support that hoof boots and pads can provide.

Not every horse has the perfect hoof shape for a boot, but that’s where pads and other accessories can really help to improve the fit and provide additional support.

Every hoof is different, so finding the right combination for each horse is key! 💚

🐴 A hoof trim is about far more than shortening the hoof wall.

One of the biggest benefits of regular trimming is restoring the hoof's ability to function naturally.

A healthy hoof should load and unload with every step. As the horse lands, structures such as the frog, digital cushion and lateral cartilages are gently stimulated, helping them stay strong and resilient. These tissues work together as part of the hoof's natural shock absorption and blood circulation system.

When feet become overgrown, the frog often loses meaningful contact with the ground. Without regular stimulation, these structures can become weaker and the heels may begin to contract, creating a narrow, deep central sulcus.

Unfortunately, a deep central sulcus is the perfect place for bacteria and fungi to thrive, often leading to painful infections that can make horses reluctant to land heel first.

Regular, well-balanced trimming helps to:
✔️ Encourage healthy frog contact with the ground.
✔️ Stimulate the digital cushion and lateral cartilages.... they're built one trim at a time. 💚🐴
