Today’s post is inspired by Java, one of our lovely regulars at the salon 🐶 🐾 — and a Shih Tzu that I learnt to groom during my training at FDM Academy ✂️. He’s the perfect little model for this week’s breed spotlight and a reminder of why Shih Tzus are such a joy to pamper 💕.

Shih Tzus might be small, but they come with big history and even bigger personalities:

✨ One of the oldest dog breeds, with roots going back over 1,000 years
✨ Originally from Tibet, later treasured by Chinese royalty
✨ Their name means “little lion”, thanks to that iconic flowing coat
✨ Known as “chrysanthemum-faced dogs” because their facial hair grows in every direction
✨ The breed nearly went extinct — every Shih Tzu today traces back to just 14 dogs
✨ Bred purely as royal companions, warming laps, feet and even beds
✨ Their double coat can grow right to the floor if left untrimmed
✨ Full of bold, affectionate, diva‑like personality — tiny dogs with huge charm

🐾💗 Is panting natural for dogs during grooming? 🐶✂️

Yes, panting is a natural behaviour for dogs, but did you know it can mean different things?

Dogs pant to regulate their body temperature, but they may also pant when they’re excited, nervous, anxious or feeling overwhelmed.

A grooming salon can be full of new sounds, smells and sensations, from the bath and dryer to clippers and nail trimming. For some dogs, this can take a little getting used to. 🐾

💕 At Fairy Dog Mother, your dog’s comfort and wellbeing always come first!

We take the time to understand each dog’s individual needs, watching their body language and recognising when they may need a little extra time, patience or reassurance.

✨ Whether it’s slowing things down, taking a little break, offering lots of reassurance or using a Happy Hoodie to help reduce dryer noise around their ears, we do our best to make every grooming experience as calm and comfortable as possible.

It’s important to remember that panting isn’t always a sign of stress, but persistent or excessive panting shouldn’t be ignored. We always look at the whole dog and how they’re behaving, because our furry friends can’t tell us with words how they’re feeling. ❤️

At just 5 months old, this brave little boy came in for his very first groom today, and he absolutely smashed it! 🥹👏🏼

Mac had a gorgeous little ✨ teddy cut ✨, one of our most popular styles for our much-loved Cockapoos! 🐶🤎

He’s already so well sensitised to the grooming process, and it really shows just how much time, patience and love his amazing parents have put in at home. 🫶🏼

Starting early and building positive associations makes such a huge difference, helping little ones like Mac grow into confident, happy salon visitors. 🛁✂️
