🐾 LEAVE IT DOES NOT MEAN “WAIT” 🐾

One of the biggest misunderstandings I see in dog training is how people teach the “leave it” command.

A lot of people teach their dog to “leave” a treat, a piece of food, or their dinner bowl… and then, after 3–5 seconds, they release the dog and let them have it.

But what have we actually taught the dog?

👉 “Wait 3–5 seconds… and then you can have it.”

That’s a wait command — not a true leave it.

And this becomes a problem when you need “leave it” in a real-life situation.

Because when your dog sees rubbish on the pavement, a squirrel running across the path, another dog, or something potentially dangerous, you don't want them thinking:

“Okay, I’ll leave it for a few seconds and then I can go back to it.” 😬

So what does “LEAVE IT” actually mean?

Don’t go near it.
Move away from it.
Disengage from it.

Whatever you have told your dog to leave, they never get it.

It’s not a temporary pause.
It’s not “wait until I release you.”
And it is never a release command.

This is why I use “leave it” for things like:

🗑️ Leave the rubbish on the side of the road.
🐿️ Leave the squirrel — stop chasing it.
🐕 Leave that dog — don't go up to them.
👀 Leave the trigger — disengage and move away.

For reactive dogs especially, a properly taught “leave it” can become an incredibly useful way of helping them disengage from a trigger and shift their focus away from something they have become fixated on.

Ultimately, leave it is about impulse control.

Your dog learns:

“I don't need to investigate everything. I don't need to chase everything. I don't need to interact with everything I see. When my human says ‘leave it’, that thing is OFF LIMITS.”

And that distinction matters.

Because in real life, sometimes “leave it” isn't about waiting…

It’s about walking away. 🐾

🐾 So, what makes Passionate Paws Puppy School different? 🐾

There are lots of great puppy classes out there, and many do a fantastic job of teaching the basics.

Of course, every puppy needs to learn things like sit, down, drop and leave it. But these are also skills that most owners can teach at home with a few treats, some patience and a little guidance.

So, where does my puppy programme differ?

My classes are about so much more than teaching your puppy a list of behaviours.
I want to set you and your puppy up for life — not just get you through those first few months. ❤️

I focus on three incredibly important foundations:

🐾 RELATIONSHIP
Building a strong, trusting relationship with your puppy so they learn that you are their safe place and someone worth listening to.

🐾 ENGAGEMENT
Teaching your puppy to choose to engage with you, even when the world around them is exciting. Because having a puppy who wants to be with you is far more valuable than simply having one who can perform a behaviour for a treat.

🐾 CONFIDENCE
Helping your puppy develop confidence in themselves and the world around them, so they can grow into a resilient, happy and emotionally balanced dog.

Because obedience comes later. Your bond comes first.

A puppy who has a strong relationship with you, knows how to engage with you and feels confident navigating the world has the foundations for so much more.

That's why my programme doesn't just focus on "Can your puppy sit?"

I look at the bigger picture — helping you understand your puppy, navigate those common puppy challenges and build skills that will continue to benefit you both long after puppyhood.
