This week’s focus: Investigate 🔍

If you notice your horse is looking off-colour, their resting temperature is higher than normal, or they are showing clinical signs, it's time to investigate and confirm if an infectious disease is the cause

Did you know that daily temperature monitoring is a simple, highly effective early warning system for catching infectious diseases early? For example, with strangles, a fever (a temperature of 38.5°C or above) is often present before the horse becomes infectious

How can we work together to protect our horses from infectious disease? It is week two of our four part series breaking down the core actions every owner needs to know.

This week’s focus: Isolate ⚠️

Isolation is very important if a horse is suspected or confirmed to have an infectious disease, they need to be moved to an isolation area as soon as possible to help protect the rest of the yard
Welcoming a new horse to the yard or returning from an event? Isolating animals in a designated quarantine area when moving onto new premises helps prevent introducing infectious diseases to the resident herd, giving you crucial time to observe their health before mixing with others

We’re saying a fond farewell to two fantastic members of the EIDS team, Tegan McGilvray and Hattie Bell! 🐴👋

Tegan and Hattie joined us earlier this year as veterinary surgeons and epidemiologists to cover Fleur Whitlock’s maternity leave. They hit the ground running during a busy spring and early summer following a marked rise in UK equine influenza cases, supporting numerous equine vets with diagnosis, outbreak control, and prevention measures.

Alongside their outbreak response work, both worked on their own EIDS projects:
🦟 Tegan delivered an expert assessment on how climate change may influence the emergence and spread of infectious equine diseases.
🪱 Hattie applied her clinical experience to help build our parasite surveillance systems while reviewing how Cyathostominosis (small redworm disease) is presenting and being managed in the field.

Thank you both for your hard work, expertise, and dedication. We wish you all the very best in your next chapters! 💙
