Pengelly Canine Hydrotherapy

Pengelly Canine Hydrotherapy Pengelly Canine Hydrotherapy is located at Calweton Vets Callington. X

Pengelly Canine Hydrotherapy has been established for over 14 years with proven track record, working along side local veterinary surgeons and with most insurance companies. We provide small animal hydrotherapy for recuperative treatment, weight loss programs and general animal health. Uniquely in this area we have the benefit of being on site of calweton veterinary centre and are therefore able

to call on a qualified veterinary surgeon should the need arise. This gives us confidence in our invaluable service to treat patients with complicated conditions such as epilepsy, heart murmurs and other medical conditions. We provide our services to several clients to "show condition" their dogs that have found swimming in a controlled environment can substantially improve muscle tone and definition. We also offer shower facilities on a non slip flooring for dogs wary of getting into the bath. I am a registered practicing veterinary nurse and will be pleased to discuss any requirements with you.

After a rough couple of years for all of us
And a never ending leaky pool due to its age it was time I said good bye to my old trusted friend.

We went round in circles trying to decide if prefab was the way to go.

over a cool drink one afternoon we came up with the crazy idea to build a proper swimming pool

With the help of my amazing builders SJCC
and my poor husband and my Dad,
Who went above and beyond to make sure, all standards and very high expectations were met

Thank you sjcc to say I’m over the moon is an understatement

This is an X-ray of a 2 week old puppy, it really shows how far the bones 🦴 have to grow before they become a proper joint! 😮

🐶 Puppy exercise is sooo important as young dogs undergo significant physical changes.

🐶 Most growth takes place between the ages of 4 to 8 months however, in some large/giant dog breeds the growth plates may remain open up to 18-20 months!

🐶 There is no question that puppies LOVE to exercise & we want nothing more than to make them happy BUT puppy exercise limits MUST be applied to prevent damage to the puppy’s developing skeletal 🦴 system.

So here’s a guide to help; ⬇️

🐶 Over-training, such as long-distance running, is unhealthy for young dogs and the benefits are minimal. Some dogs are driven to exercise and, as owners, we feel we are doing them a service by giving them what they want...
So... what is enough?🤔

Appropriate Puppy Exercise 0-6mths

🐾 Walking – slow, short walks up to 30 mins, with plenty of opportunities for your puppy to stop & sniff sniff sniff

🐾Formal skills training – sit, stay, down, touch – no more than 2 mins per session.

🐾Free play – no more than 10 mins; discourage rough play, such as body slamming.

🐾 Chasing objects – roll balls and drag toys along the ground. Avoid repetitive ball throwing & chasing.

🐾Tugging – do not pull against the dog – hold the toy and let the puppy pull against you; keep the toy low, to maintain the puppy’s neck in a straight line with its back.

🐾Avoid – direct running 👎 , jumping, indoor/outdoor stairs, fast turns, sudden stops like chasing a ball! 🎾

🐾Young puppies, up to six months, should not be exercised with the intent to increase strength or endurance. These puppies should be allowed to play naturally, i.e. self-directed play.

🐾 Jumping is often encouraged, with little understanding of the damage it can cause a young pup. Do not allow your puppy up on high objects without good supervision and assist them when getting down.

We hope you share this with all your friends, students & puppy owners - Let’s spread the word and make positive changes 👍🏼👍🏼

He just can’t help himself he loves the fame but it’s always for all the wrong reasons.

Yogi, a beloved St Bernard, is on the road to recovery after undergoing delicate heart surgery with small animal surgery specialist Malcolm Jack here at Cave.

Yogi was suffering from a pericardial effusion – a serious heart problem where fluid gathers around the heart and needed immediate surgery, during which there were further complications requiring a blood transfusion.

🗣️ Malcolm said: “Yogi was in a critical condition at the end of surgery, but he stabilised after the transfusions and the haemorrhage stopped. We continued to monitor and treat him until he was able to go home, and we’re very pleased to hear he’s made such a good recovery.”

Providing your pet with environmental enrichments is a great idea during the time you spend together. Here is a little idea I’ve been thinking about for a little while as one of our vets recommended it for the area surrounding the hydro unit and veterinary centre.

Sensory gardens for dogs are becoming more and more popular, especially in rescue centres as an alternative way to tackle stress in dogs.
