Let’s talk reactive dogs…

This handsome boy is Frank. He’s our 9 year old Lurcher, and we’ve had him since he was around five months old.

Frank is a big boy with big feelings! He’s also a huge snuggle monster who absolutely loves children, cuddles and, most importantly, his family. But despite being the biggest softie at home, Frank has always found the world outside a little overwhelming.

Dogs, people, bikes, squirrels… if it moves, there’s a good chance Frank has something to say about it! šŸ˜…

For Frank, I believe much of his reactivity stems from fear and feeling unsure. Over the years, we’ve learned that managing his environment and helping him to feel safe makes a huge difference.

For us, that means choosing quieter and more remote places to walk where possible, keeping him safely and securely on his lead, and always keeping an eye on what’s happening around us.

If we spot another dog approaching, we don’t wait until we’re right on top of them and hope for the best. We’ll calmly move to one side, create as much space as possible and let the other dog pass.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned from living with a reactive dog is how much they can pick up on us, too. If I’m tense, nervous or anticipating a reaction, Frank can often feel that. Staying calm, steady and matter of fact helps reassure him that I’ve got things under control.

Reactive dogs aren’t ā€œbadā€ dogs. They’re often dogs who find certain situations difficult, overwhelming or frightening — and they deserve patience, understanding and walks that are managed around their individual needs.

Frank has taught me so much over the years, and living with him is a huge part of why I understand just how important it is to meet dogs where they are, rather than expecting every dog to fit into the same mould.

I’d love to know, do you have a reactive dog, or have you ever lived with one?

Just a little heads up to walkers going to Luckett/Greenscoombe Woods - I’ve picked up a fair old bit of glass down by the river this evening at the quarry end.
I don’t think it’s a recent thing, some was packed well into the mud but the rain appears to have lifted it.
Keep your eyes peeled! I got all I could find, there were some super sharp bits!

It may be a fairly new business, but launching over the summer has been a baptism of fire.
It’s been a juggle. At times it’s been a struggle. But it’s been an honour too, to every person who has trusted me with your babies, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

And thank goodness for cooler weather and brief showers šŸ˜‚šŸ„“
