Multiple award winning one stop shop for all your dog needs - 5* Dog Hotel, Daycare, Grooming, Dog Taxi, Wedding Chaperone, Teeth Cleaning, Natural treats shop. Hi, we’re Alice and Bill and before buying the business we ran a successful home boarding business for dogs where we won ‘Family Business of the Year 2024’ in the Lancashire Pet & Animal Care Awards. We’ve now realised our dream of expanding our existing business to offer a 'one stop shop' for all your doggy needs in a friendly and stimulating environment. We’ve set the business up in a way that we’d want our own dog to be looked after, i.e. daily updates and photos of how they’re getting on and what they’re doing, lots of cuddles etc. We take pride in providing 1:1 care and attention for each dog, with individual exercise and enrichment programmes discussed with owners prior to them being left. We’re passionate about dogs and have always had them since being very young. Up until recently we had three of our own, Poppy – a Border Collie, Archie – a Border Terrier and Billy – a Beagle who we rescued from Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary after him living there for 8 years waiting for his forever home. Unfortunately, Archie and Billy passed over Rainbow Bridge due to old age and so now we just have Poppy. Having been brought up with dogs and having always had at least one dog we’d consider ourselves experienced dog owners. Over the years we’ve faced a number of situations and challenges including bringing a new puppy home, rescue dogs, house training, recall training, jealousy, separation anxiety, possessiveness and we’ve also had dogs with behavioural issues which unfortunately means we’ve been bitten a few times too!

Today, we were joined by two brothers who are currently enjoying their stay with us at Farm Cottage Boarding - River, a 3-year-old Cockapoo, and Bailey, a 7-year-old Cockapoo!

These handsome boys popped along for a follow-up appointment with our Gentle Dental ultrasonic teeth cleaning service to help keep their teeth clean, their gums healthy and their breath fresh!

Both boys were very well behaved! Bailey was a little fidgety at times, but that didn’t stop his tail wagging throughout his appointment! We think that deserves an extra special treat!

We love being able to offer our guests a little extra care while they’re staying with us, helping them feel their very best from nose to tail! 💙❤️🐾

This morning, we took a little ride out to Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary to drop off all your wonderful donations collected as part of our Harvest Festival Collection!

From food, treats and biscuits to bedding and other essentials, our van was filled with your kindness, and we can’t thank you all enough for your generosity!

Every donation, no matter how big or small, helps support the amazing work Bleakholt does for animals in need.

Did you know our Bleakholt Collection Box is in Reception all year round? So, if you have any spare dog or cat food, treats, toys, bedding or other pet-related items that you no longer need, we’ll always be happy to take them off your hands and drop them off on our next visit!

It’s a lovely way for our Farm Cottage Boarding family to give something back to the animals who need it most.

Thank you for helping us make a difference, one paw at a time! ❤️💙🐾

Did you know that your dog’s sense of smell is their most powerful superpower?

Scent work is a fantastic way to mentally stimulate your dog, build confidence, and tap into their natural instincts - no fancy equipment needed to get started!

Why scent work is so beneficial:
• Builds confidence in nervous dogs
• Provides brilliant mental stimulation
• Helps reduce stress and boredom
• Encourages natural problem-solving skills
• Suitable for dogs of all ages and abilities

Even just a few minutes of sniffing games can be more tiring (and rewarding!) than a long walk.

How to get started at home:
A great beginner introduction to scent work is this video by Scentwork UK, which shows simple ways to begin using your dog’s nose in a fun and structured way:

Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDh5yarxAiQ&utm_source=chatgpt.com

At our dog hotel we use scent-based enrichment regularly because it’s calming, engaging, and incredibly natural for dogs. Whether it’s hidden treats, scent trails, or search games, it’s one of the easiest ways to help dogs feel settled and fulfilled.

Because a dog who gets to use their nose… is a dog who goes home happier and more relaxed 💙❤️🐾

Some lovely news to share with everyone….

Elizabeth has been successful in her recent application for a Dog Welfare Assistant role at the Dogs Trust and her last shift with us will be Saturday 24 October.

Elizabeth is a really valued member of our team, and we’ll be sad to see her leave but we’re genuinely so pleased for her. Given all the hard work she’s put into her degree in Animal Management and her aspirations to build a career working on the behavioural side with dogs, this is absolutely the right move for her.

Well done, Elizabeth! We’re really proud of you and everything you’ve achieved, and we know you’re going to absolutely smash it in your new role!

We’ll miss having you as part of the Farm Cottage Boarding family, but we can’t wait to see what the future holds for you! 💙❤️🐾

Autumn is one of our favourite times of year at Farm Cottage Boarding - crisp leaves, cooler walks and lots of exciting things for dogs to sniff!

But there are a couple of autumn hazards hiding in our gardens and parks that dog owners need to be aware of.

Dogs love rummaging through piles of leaves, but damp, decomposing leaves and garden waste can contain moulds that produce toxins.

If eaten, these can potentially cause serious illness, including:
- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Tremors or shaking
- Wobbliness
- Muscle spasms
- Seizures
- In severe cases, potentially life-threatening illness

That lovely big pile of leaves might look like the perfect place for a dog to dive into… but keep an eye on what they're actually eating!

Autumn is also the time when many of us start planting spring-flowering bulbs.

But did you know that daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and crocuses can all be toxic to dogs? The bulbs themselves are generally the most dangerous part, and curious dogs may dig them up or mistake them for something tasty.

Symptoms can include:
- Drooling
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Lethargy
- In more serious cases, tremors or heart problems

A few simple precautions can help:

- Keep compost heaps and garden waste securely away from dogs.

- Don't allow your dog to eat large quantities of fallen or rotting leaves.

- Keep newly planted bulbs out of reach and consider using barriers to prevent digging.

Keep a close eye on dogs who love investigating or eating everything they find.

Sniffing is encouraged… snacking on the garden isn't! ❤️💙🐾
