Without an appropriate channel, their boundless energy and unmet natural instincts can come out in all sorts of problematic ways: running, chasing, playing, hunting and lack of hearing when they’re busy doing something ‘important’ to name a few! Our qualified, experienced, and knowledgeable team provide Dog Training and Equipment from our base near Cambridge in East Anglia. Our passion is providing stimulation and structure by sharing our tried and tested training methods and tools with fellow dog so that they can enjoy spending time with a happy and satisfied dog. What We Do
At Anglian Dog Works, there are two sides to the coin: professional dog training services & eco-friendly dog training equipment. We offer general dog training and agility in the areas surrounding our base on the three counties border of Cambridgeshire, Essex & Suffolk. This includes helping owners online plus from Cambridge, Saffron Walden, Haverhill and Newmarket. We have also picked a selection of dog training supplies such as natural treats, eco-friendly and sustainable dog products to complement your training, available in our store. We often meet owners of dogs with bundles of energy and bounce who would love to give training and agility a go. Joining one of our sessions near Cambridge shows owners with dogs of all ages, how training and agility gives pets a job and keeps them active, thinking, and busy! Taster Workshops
Workshops are an accessible way to give agility a try. You can introduce dogs to this new challenge to keep their brain ticking, meet other dogs and like-minded handers too. We love hosting them as they are a lot of fun; they can also be a good way to see if joining one of our courses would be the right fit.

We started Anglian Dog Works because we wanted to help owners of energetic dogs work through their training struggles, and achieve the dog-owning life they envisioned; we do this by providing stimulation and structure through sharing our tried and tested training methods and tools with fellow dog owners. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I see all of these as strengths I bring to pet gundog training sessions.

With a background in science, all the methods I use are modern, positive, and proven to work.

Yes, I use food and other rewards. When working with gundogs, the world is full of potential reinforcement. If I’m not paying them, they often go self-employed! Initially I reward generously, then thin it so that longer chains of behaviour earn the payout.

While I work and train kennel dogs, the UK gundog season is just a few months of autumn and winter. I believe for the majority of the year, dogs can be pets first. I actually prefer training my own dogs in multiple complementary disciplines for variety.

Whether you’re aiming for the field or simply want gundog-standard obedience for your pet (without ever stepping on a shoot!), gundog training is a fantastic way to get any breed’s brain ticking and give them a job to do.

Having worked on game shoots for more than a decade, I know what it entails. We hunt and eat our own meat, and I am happy to talk to anyone about that field-to-fork belief.

I don’t use lead jerks or any other harsh corrections. Firsthand experience shows that telling a dog “no, don’t do that” isn’t as effective as setting up drills where they’re likely to offer the wanted behaviour, then marking and rewarding when they do to build a picture of what you do want instead.

Entrepreneurs wear many hats, and Matt is certainly no exception.

Videographer, Photographer, Marketing, Research & development, manufacturing, order packing, finance, and manual labour!

As if that wasn’t enough... Matt recently attended his graduation ceremony for his PhD in Chemistry and Materials Science! 🎓

Building Anglian Dog Works alongside a PhD was a lot of hard work. It meant research and lab work during the day, followed by evenings and weekends dedicated to designing, making and packing orders to grow the business.

And because he clearly loves keeping busy, alongside all of this, Matt also fulfilled a childhood dream by training and serving as a retained firefighter for nearly two years! 🧑‍🚒

Balancing research, business, and emergency service hasn’t been easy. It was an absolute grind, but it’s brought us to our biggest milestone yet.

This month we signed on something hugely exciting! We can’t wait to share all the details with you as soon as it becomes official.

Your dog can’t learn.
Many of the worst practices in the dog training world are the result of two things:
1. Dog training is completely unregulated.
2. Old wives’ tales and outdated research are still pervasive.
In many cases, methods like those seen in this video are the go-to approach of the uneducated. That isn’t necessarily a reflection of someone’s character, but anyone providing a service to the public has a responsibility to educate themselves and keep their knowledge up to date.
Often, these methods can appear to work — particularly to a stressed owner who just wants to ‘fix the dog’, or to an uneducated observer.
At Anglian Dogworks, we approach things a little differently.
Our training is built around the individual dog — their personality, natural drives and motivations. We focus on figuring out how we can get a dog to offer the behaviour we want and then reinforce it, rather than relying on constant corrections the dog may not understand.
We’ve seen dogs in both pet and working environments that have clearly been treated harshly. You can often see it in their body language.
A broken dog isn’t a trained dog.
And a broken dog certainly isn’t a working dog.
