Why Did My Tortoise Wee on Me?
A question we hear quite often at 's Reptile Retreat, in Burwell,Cambridge.
You've carefully picked up your tortoise, settled down for some bonding time, and suddenly... you're wearing a warm surprise! π¦π«£
While it can be unexpected (and a little messy), tortoises don't usually urinate on people out of spite or bad behaviour.
What Does It Mean?
In many cases, a tortoise urinating while being held is simply a natural response to feeling startled, stressed, or insecure.
In the wild, tortoises rely on conserving water, so releasing urine when frightened can be an instinctive reaction. Sometimes they may also empty their bladder because they've recently had a drink or a soak and simply needed to go.
Other possible reasons include:
β
Being picked up unexpectedly
β
Feeling unsupported while being carried
β
Being handled for too long
β
Needing the toilet before handling
β
General nervousness around people
How Can You Reduce the Chances?
π’ Support Their Body Properly:
Always hold your tortoise securely with both hands supporting the shell and body. Feeling stable can help reduce stress.
π’ Handle Gently and Calmly:
Approach slowly and avoid sudden movements or loud noises.
π’ Let Them Toilet First:
If your tortoise has recently soaked or had a drink, allow them some time to wander around before handling.
π’ Keep Handling Sessions Short:
Some tortoises enjoy interaction more than others. Watch their behaviour and respect their comfort level, and build trust gradually.
The Takeaway:
A tortoise weeing while being held is often their way of saying, "I'm not completely comfortable right now." By handling gently, providing proper support, and paying attention to their body language, you can help make future interactions more enjoyable for both of you.
