Meet Reggie the 7yr old Cocker Spaniel🐶
Reggie was out running one evening when he unfortunately fell into a pothole and injured his right forelimb.
He was referred to WMR, where an examination and X-rays confirmed a right-sided lateral condylar fracture. ❤️🩹
Given Reggie’s breed, our veterinary team were concerned that this fracture may have been caused by an underlying condition known as a humeral intercondylar fissure (HIF).
This is a small crack within the humeral condyle (the part of the upper limb bone that forms the elbow joint), which can lead to pain, lameness, and an increased risk of fracture.
HIFs are most commonly seen in Spaniel breeds and can often affect both elbows. 🐕
To investigate further, a CT scan was performed, which confirmed the presence of a HIF in Reggie’s left elbow as well. 🦴
Our veterinary surgeon Andy Whittingham carried out surgery to stabilise the fracture in Reggie’s right elbow.
Eight weeks later, Reggie returned for a recheck, which confirmed that the fracture had healed well. At this stage, a screw was placed in the left elbow to stabilise the HIF and help prevent it from progressing to a fracture in the future. 🌟
Well done, Reggie - you’ve been incredibly brave throughout your treatment! 🙌💕
