Today is ‘National Black Dog Day ‘. It is to raise awareness of the beauty of black dogs because they are often overlooked for adoption in shelters and rescue centres.
This is our beautiful Tilly. 10/03/09 - 11/02/24 🖤 No longer here with us physically but loved and with us in spirit each and every single day. She was a rescue with a heart of gold, gentle and loving in every way. Please share pictures and stories of your beautiful black dogs here, whether they are here now and having fun or they are cherished dogs over the rainbow 🌈 bridge. X
Why are black dogs often overlooked?
• Poor Visibility: Black fur absorbs light, making it difficult to see a dog's facial expressions, eyes, or distinct features when they are inside dimly lit kennel environments.
• Camera Challenges: Dark dogs are notoriously harder to photograph well. Because many potential owners first browse rescue profiles online, poor-quality or shadowy photos fail to catch a browser's eye.
• Negative Media & Stereotypes: Movies, books, and folklore have historically portrayed large black dogs as menacing, aggressive, or symbols of bad luck (like hellhounds).
Reactivity with other dogs……..
• Did you know that some dogs react negatively to black dogs because dark fur hides subtle facial expressions and body language, making it harder for other dogs to read them.
• Without visible facial cues, a relaxed or playful look can easily be misinterpreted as a tense or threatening stare.
• Dogs rely heavily on visual communication to feel safe. When they cannot read another dog's intentions, fear or defensive aggression can trigger a reaction.
