Turning your horses out—even in bad weather—is one of the best things you can do for their physical and mental health. Regular turnout keeps their joints moving, supports healthy digestion, and reduces the risk of colic, stiffness, and stable vices that come from standing in a stall too long. Horses are built to move and to live outdoors; fresh air and the freedom to walk, graze, and interact with herd mates help lower stress and prevent boredom-related behaviors. As long as they have appropriate shelter, footing that isn’t dangerously slick, and are blanketed or unclipped appropriately for the conditions, a little mud, rain, or cold won’t hurt them—what hurts far more is being cooped up without movement. In short, consistent turnout, even on less-than-perfect days, supports soundness, sanity, and overall well-being.

With the right care, age doesn’t have to hold your horse back. And it certainly hasn’t with Laddie! With a remarkable past in the hunting field and eventing circuit, this Irish Sports Horse has now settled into a well-deserved retirement, though he’s still very much the boss of the herd. Thanks to the care and dedication of his owner, Chloe, Laddie stays comfortable and active with the help of magnetic therapy, including a rug and leg wraps that are part of his regular routine.

Their story is a brilliant example of how a bit of extra support can make all the difference, helping horses stay mobile, happy, and enjoying life well into their golden years.

“I use them on my eldest boy, Laddie. He is a 31-year-old 16.2hh Irish sports horse. He was used as a master’s hunt horse and event horse in Ireland until he was 18. He then did British Evening until he was 20 (none of this was with us).

He enjoys a happy retirement at ours, but as expected, has a lot of wear and tear on his joints and gets stiff, especially when stabled. He currently lives out in a herd of 9 (he is the big boss). He wears his magnetic rug almost every night (anything under 15 degrees), and we put other rugs on top if needed. He wears the leg wraps or leg bands overnight, too. We see significant improvements in his mobility if he has worn the magnets overnight, and we see an increase in how comfortable he is lying down and getting up when he wears them frequently.

I have a smaller rug for my Welsh B that we would use whilst travelling to/from RI/HOYS WHP qualifiers to keep him in tip-top shape and aid recovery on the way home.”
