Working lines vs show lines — please research before you choose
One thing that really needs saying: working‑line dogs and show‑line dogs can be worlds apart, even within the same breed.
A perfect example is working cockers vs show cockers. In my opinion, they couldn’t be more different.
Working cockers are bred for drive, stamina, speed, problem‑solving, and a brain that needs a job.
Show cockers are bred for type, structure, coat, and a steadier, companion‑friendly temperament.
They may share a name, but they do not share a lifestyle.
Why this matters
Because a working‑line dog will behave like a working‑line dog — not because they’re “hyper”, “naughty”, or “too much”, but because they were designed to work.
Working lines often come with:
• High drive — they need an outlet
• High stamina — they don’t switch off easily
• High intelligence — boredom becomes destruction
• High sensitivity — they feel everything
• High motion response — chasing, flushing, retrieving
Show lines typically offer:
• Lower drive
• More predictable energy
• Softer, steadier temperaments
• Easier pet‑home suitability
Neither is “better”. They’re simply built for different jobs.
Please research your lines
Before you commit to a puppy, research the lines.
Make sure you understand whether you’re choosing working lines or show lines, and what that actually means day‑to‑day.
Go in with eyes open and appropriate knowledge, so you’re not surprised when a working‑line dog behaves exactly like a working dog.
Choose the dog that fits your life — not just your eye.
