Fascial adhesion – the “sticky” component compromising mobility 🐶
Fascia is a connective tissue present throughout the body, located between the skin and muscles, between muscle groups, and even between internal organs. It also carries blood vessels and plays an essential role in structural support and effective movement.
When fascia becomes compromised, it can adhere, leading to restrictions and compensatory movement patterns. Both superficial and deep fascia are commonly involved.
As dogs are often unable to move correctly, altered weight-bearing and reduced range of motion can contribute to the development of fascial adhesions, and vice versa. Compromised fascia loses its ability to glide, instead presenting as “sticky,” which may lead to discomfort, pain, and increased sensitivity if not addressed appropriately.
Fascial restriction can also occur in otherwise healthy dogs!
During rehabilitation sessions, we identify these compensations and address them, while also supporting owners in recognising signs of fascial adhesions and assisting their dogs between sessions.
