“It isn’t who they are. It’s what they’ve learned.”

🐾 Teaching a Dog Not to Hog You 🐾

At the beach, this is just another one of those behaviours I work on regularly.

You take your dog out for a lovely walk and before you know it they’re demanding every second of your attention. They climb all over you, jump on your belongings, push between family members, and make it almost impossible to have a conversation with anyone else.

You try to say hello to someone and suddenly your dog is jumping up, pawing at you, nudging you, or dragging you back towards them because they simply can’t cope with not being the centre of attention.

Most people accept this as “just their personality.”

It isn’t.

It’s learned behaviour.

Dogs repeat behaviours that work for them. If demanding attention gets attention, they’ll keep demanding it. If jumping, pawing, nudging and interrupting gets a response, they’ll do it more often.

Over time these behaviours become habits, and eventually owners start believing that’s simply what their dog is like.

But it isn’t who they are.

It’s what they’ve learned.

One of the most important things we can teach our dogs is how to settle, relax and enjoy being part of the family without constantly demanding interaction.

A calm dog isn’t a boring dog.

A calm dog is a dog that has learned self-control, patience and how to switch off.

These are life skills, and just like recall, lead walking and good manners, they can absolutely be taught.

Because so often what people think is “personality” is actually training.

🐾 Recall Isn’t a Command. It’s a Relationship. 🐾

One of the most rewarding things I see when working with clients is the moment they realise that recall isn’t really about getting their dog to come back when called.

It’s about building a dog that wants to stay connected to them in the first place.

Over the years, I’ve worked with many dogs that arrived with little or no recall. Owners were worried about letting them off lead, frustrated by being ignored, or anxious that their dog would disappear the moment they spotted another dog, person, or interesting scent.

But through consistent training, relationship building, and learning how to become relevant to their dog, something amazing happens.

The dog starts checking in.

They walk a few steps ahead, stop, look back, circle around, and naturally keep track of where their owner is. Not because they’re being constantly called back, but because they’ve learned that staying connected is rewarding.

That’s when recall stops being a training exercise and becomes a way of life.

Of course, we still teach the cue. We still practise. We still reinforce. But the strongest recalls are built on trust, engagement, and a relationship where the dog genuinely values being with their owner.

For me, success isn’t a dog running back from 200 metres away.

Success is a dog that never felt the need to leave in the first place.

And perhaps most importantly, please, please don’t ever forget to reward those check-ins. Whether it’s a stroke, a smile, a kind word, a game, or a treat, let your dog know that choosing to stay connected to you was the right decision.

Too often, owners focus on rewarding the big recall from a distance and miss the dozens of moments beforehand when their dog voluntarily checked in, slowed down, looked back, or chose to stay close. Those little moments are where reliable recall is really built.

Every time your dog chooses you, make it worthwhile. ❤️🐾

There’s something I absolutely love about working with dogs — learning to work with their natural behaviour rather than against it 🐾❤️

Three spaniels, sat patiently in the boot, eyes completely fixed on me (Except Ralph who was easily distracted that day!) waiting for their cue. Not because they’re scared to move… not because they’ve been forced… but because they’ve learnt that calmness, focus and self-control bring rewards.

Dogs naturally want guidance, structure and clear communication. Training isn’t about “controlling” a dog — it’s about understanding how they think, what motivates them and building a relationship where they genuinely want to listen.

And then comes the best part… “Okay!” 🏖️🐕🐕🐕

Off to the beach they go!

The little moments often say the most ❤️
