☕ Cuppa Companions: Why does my dog behave like this? 🐾

Join us at Berries Community Café on Thursday 1st October for our next Cuppa Companions session, where we’ll be joined by Sarah Welburn (IMDT) from Bude K9 Services.

Sarah is a dog lover, dog owner and dog trainer, and she’ll be giving us a fascinating talk all about our four-legged friends!

She’ll be talking about how dogs learn and some of the principles of canine behaviour, helping us to better understand why our dogs behave the way they do.

Struggling with your dog's recall? Tired of seeing your dog running off into the distance as you shout their name or their recall cue again and again? Then the Recall Workshop is for you!

There are many reasons why recall fails. You may think your dog is being stubborn or naughty, but that is highly unlikely as it is just not how a dog's brain works. It is more likely a case that:
• Your recall cue predicts the end of the fun
• There has not been enough focus on the foundation layers of a good recall or
• You've used it in environments where there are too many competing distractions for your dog's training level and the cue has been weakened through rehearsal.

In this workshop we will go back to basics; we will break the recall down into a simple chain of behaviours, starting with conditioning a rock-solid recall cue, and building all the way through to putting the lead back on. We will also look at some key foundation behaviours that will serve you well not only for your dog's recall but a whole host of other desirable behaviours.

This is a great class if you are just starting out on your recall journey too!

A lovely review from Kirsty who needed some help with her 7-year old Vizsla after some undesirable habits had crept in over time. We refreshed her routine for greeting people, tightened up her recall, and introduced a different style of ball play to help keep arousal levels in check and reduce demand barking.

Bertie is one of my regular dog walking clients, but on Sunday he joined the Simply Searching Scentwork Workshop that I ran — though he was a bit confused at first as to why we weren't interacting in our normal way! He decided the best option was to sit right at the front with me until he figured out what all the sniffing was about. 🥰

Once he got the hang of it, he was brilliant — and as you can see from the second photo, he completely zonked out afterwards!

Scentwork is great mental stimulation for dogs. It engages a their natural instincts and problem-solving skills, which can tire them out just as much (if not more) than a long walk. All that sniffing and thinking uses a huge amount of energy — it’s like a workout for the brain.
