September means new routines... for us and our pets.

As families head back to work, school and college, many pets suddenly find themselves spending much more time alone than they have over the summer holidays.

Some pets adapt quickly, but others can develop separation-related anxiety. Common signs include:

🐶 Excessive barking or howling
🚪 Scratching at doors or windows
🦴 Destructive chewing
💩 Toileting indoors
😟 Restlessness, pacing or drooling
🐱 Changes in appetite or hiding away

The good news is that there are ways to help!

Start building up time apart gradually, provide puzzle feeders or enrichment toys, make sure your pet has had enough exercise before you leave, and create a calm, safe space where they can relax.

If your pet is showing signs of anxiety, don't ignore them. Separation anxiety is a genuine welfare issue, and early support can make a real difference. Our team can offer advice, rule out underlying medical conditions and discuss behaviour support where needed.

A gentler way to spay your dog 🐶

If you're considering having your dog spayed, did you know that at Tamar Vets we can offer laparoscopic - or keyhole - spaying?

Instead of one larger surgical incision, keyhole surgery uses a camera and specialist instruments through two tiny incisions, typically just 0.3–1cm.

For your dog, that can mean:

🐾 Less post-operative pain
🐾 Smaller incisions
🐾 Faster healing
🐾 A lower risk of wound complications
🐾 Usually just 2–3 days of rest, compared with 10–14 days following a conventional spay
🐾 Often no need for the dreaded buster collar!

For our surgeons, the camera provides a clear, magnified view inside the abdomen, allowing them to operate with excellent precision.

Keyhole surgery requires specialist equipment, investment and advanced training, and we're incredibly proud to have a skilled team at Tamar Vets able to offer this minimally invasive option to our patients.

When it comes to cancer care in pets, treatment options continue to evolve - and electrochemotherapy is one of the more advanced techniques now available in veterinary medicine.

This treatment combines two elements:

> A chemotherapy drug applied directly to the tumour area
> Short, controlled electrical pulses that help the drug enter cancer cells more effectively

The aim is to maximise the treatment effect at the tumour site while minimising impact on the rest of the body.

It may be considered in certain cases where:

> Surgery is not possible or not fully effective on its own
> Tumours are located in areas that are difficult to operate on

Giant Hogweed is a dangerous invasive plant found in parts of the UK, and it can cause serious harm to both pets and people.

Why it’s dangerous:

🌿 Sap reacts with sunlight, causing severe burns
🌿 It can lead to painful blistering and long-term skin sensitivity
🌿 Contact with eyes can result in temporary or permanent damage

What to do:

> Do not touch it or allow pets near it
> If contact occurs, wash skin immediately with soap and water
> Keep affected area out of sunlight
> Seek medical or veterinary advice urgently

If you spot giant hogweed locally, report it to your council so it can be safely removed.

It’s National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day - because cats deserve great healthcare, too.
