Autumn brings some extra hazards for our pets even in our own gardens.

Here are our top tips to keep your pets safe!

🌿 Garden: Keep chemicals, fertilisers and slug pellets safely out of reach, and be careful when clearing leaves, compost and woodpiles where wildlife may be hiding.

🪱 Parasites: Fleas, ticks and worms are still active in autumn and tend to seek out our pets as warm hosts, hitching a ride into our homes. Keep protection up to date with our Tamar Active Health Plan!

🔥 Bonfire Night: Always check bonfires carefully for hedgehogs and other wildlife before lighting, and ideally build your bonfire shortly before use.

🍄 Fungi & acorns: Keep curious noses away from mushrooms and unfamiliar plants that may sprout, as many can be toxic.

Casio popped in to see us for a weight check with one of our nurses, and we couldn't resist taking a quick snap of that gorgeous face! 📸🥰

Weight checks are a useful way to keep an eye on how your pet is doing, and Casio was a delight to have in the practice.

Meet Pippa and Poppy! 💕

These two adorable 9-week-old kittens came to see us at Tamar Vets for their first vaccinations and a health check.

As daylight hours start to decrease and the temperatures drop, our pets are at higher risk during their walks or time outdoors.

🐱 Cats & road safety

Cats who are used to going outdoors may now be spending more time outside in the dark. Reduced visibility increases the risk of road traffic accidents (RTAs). Where possible, consider encouraging your cat to come indoors before it gets dark, particularly if you live near busy roads. Utilise reflective, quick-release collars and ensure their microchip details are up to date. Adjusting their feeding times slowly is a great way to encourage them home.

🐶 Dogs & evening walks

If you’re walking your dog early in the morning or after work, visibility can be much poorer. Reflective collars, leads, coats and high-visibility clothing can help you and your dog be seen. Remember to ensure your pet's microchip details are up to date too, as it's the best chance you’ll have of being reunited if you get separated. Many pet owners are also utilising pet GPS trackers that attach to collars, for example, when walking their pet off-lead.

🌧️ Changing weather

As temperatures drop and conditions become wetter and windier, remember that our pets can feel the cold too. Older pets, puppies, kittens and those with certain health conditions may be particularly vulnerable. Make sure they have somewhere warm and dry to rest at home, and take extra care on wet, slippery surfaces with mats or rugs, and also consider a coat during their walks.
