As temperatures rise, so does the risk of lungworm in dogs. Lungworm is spread by slugs, snails, and their slime, which dogs can ingest when playing in gardens, drinking from puddles, or chewing grass.

Signs can include coughing, breathing difficulties, tiredness, weight loss, bleeding problems, or vomiting. In some cases, it can be life-threatening if untreated.

✔ Avoid toys left outside overnight
✔ Clean water bowls regularly
✔ Keep up with preventative parasite treatments

UPDATE - power is back on!

Have you ever considered a laparoscopic (keyhole) spay for your dog?

Traditional spays involve a larger surgical incision to remove the ovaries and uterus. A laparoscopic spay uses specialised equipment and a small camera to perform the procedure through tiny incisions.

Benefits include:

✔️ Smaller surgical wounds
✔️ Reduced pain after surgery
✔️ Faster recovery times
✔️ Lower risk of complications

During the procedure, a camera allows the surgeon to view the abdomen on a screen, enabling precise surgical techniques. Many dogs who undergo laparoscopic spays are back to their normal selves much more quickly compared with traditional surgery.

It’s Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month! But do you know what a vet nurse’s day really looks like?

No two days are ever the same.

In one shift, our nurses might:

> Admit surgical patients and prepare them for theatre
> Monitor anaesthesia and adjust medications
> Recover pets safely after procedures
> Care for hospitalised patients overnight
> See pets and their owners in nurse clinics
> Assist in emergency situations
> Answer clinical queries from concerned owners
> Clean and maintain surgical equipment
> Run samples in the laboratory
> Comfort a pet during their final moments

They are there at the very best and the very hardest times.

As Registered Veterinary Nurses, they are accountable professionals who work under strict codes of conduct and clinical standards.

We are so incredibly proud of our nursing team - their skill, empathy and resilience are at the heart of our practice 💕

Is there a better way to start a new week? 😍

Meet Micky, who is a teeny weeny Chihuahua puppy. He was such a brave boy for his first vaccinations. We made sure his visit was super special. He enjoyed some work experience on reception, complete with treats and cuddles - of course!

The telephone may be bigger than him, but this little guy definitely commanded all our attention ❤️

Hedgehogs are one of the UK’s most loved wild animals - but sadly, their numbers have declined significantly in recent years due to habitat loss, road traffic accidents and garden hazards.

As a veterinary practice, we occasionally see injured hedgehogs brought to us before they are then expertly taken care of by our wonderful receptionist, Sue, who runs Born to be wild

So, what can you do at home to help hedgehogs?

Small changes to your garden can make a big difference:

🦔 Create a 13cm x 13cm “hedgehog highway” gap in fences

🦔 Check long grass and compost heaps before strimming

🦔 Avoid using slug pellets

🦔 Provide shallow dishes of fresh water (no milk)

🦔 Cover drains and deep holes

If you find a hedgehog out during the day, appearing wobbly, injured or very small (especially outside autumn), it may need help.

Please contact a local wildlife rescue, such as Born to be wild, for advice before intervening.

Last up from Beth's weight loss warriors, we have these two gorgeous girlies, Willow & Ditsy 💕

Willow started attending Beth's weight clinic in July 2025, and Ditsy started in September. They have both now hit their target weights! 🎉

Willow has lost 1kg and has been maintaining for months now, and Ditsy has lost 700g total as of Friday! Their owner has been super committed and has come in for regular monthly weigh-ins and measurements, and we have worked out a diet plan to suit both their individual needs.

One of the biggest differences their owner has noticed is how super speedy they’ve become!

We're so proud of you both, and it's been such a pleasure looking after these lovely little ladies and helping them achieve their weight loss target! 💕

RVN Beth is sharing the second of her recent weight loss warriors, who have been achieving incredible things thanks to the dedication and commitment of their wonderful owners taking part in our nurse weight clinics 🎉

Next up is gorgeous Buddy, who is still on his weight loss journey, which he started in September 2025 at 7.9kg. This 'purr-fect' boy has lost 1.7kg to date!

Cats can be notoriously difficult to get weight off, but his owners are doing a fab job and are committed to the cause, even if Buddy doesn’t want to come in for his monthly weigh-ins and measurements!

The biggest changes his owners have noticed are:

🐱 More energy
🐱 Increased activity level
🐱 Improved coat quality (shinier) and he’s able to groom more now, so less matting on his back end
🐱 More affectionate
🐱 Fits through his cat flap 😉

Again, as with Maisie who we introduced yesterday, this has been through a combination of owner commitment and prescription weight loss diet food (Virbac W1).

You're doing amazingly well, Buddy! 🥰

Did you know our nurses run weight clinics for pets? As we head into May and celebrate Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, it seems like the perfect time to shine a spotlight on some of their star patients and how possible weight loss is when dedicated owners work alongside our fabulous nursing team to help pets reach their ideal weight! 💕

Beth has a few success stories to share - she calls them her weight loss warriors and is so proud of her lovely patients and their owners, who have worked so hard and shown such commitment!

First up is A-Maising Maisie! 🥰

Maisie started her weight loss journey in December 2025 at 19.8kg and got to 15.4kg on Monday (end of April), losing a total of 4.4kg. 🎉

The biggest difference her owners have noticed is that she is so speedy now and has so much more energy (if spaniels can get any more energetic! 😂). This fabulous weight loss was thanks to a combination of owner dedication, determination, and a prescription weight loss diet (Virbac W1).

We're so proud of you, Maisie, and we love that you have more energy - nothing will slow you down now! ♥️
