Can your dogs share space and comfortable places?

Because this situation isn’t a given, every dog needs to be considered, assessed and understood outside of this context before I’m happy allowing it. There are rules for sharing me and there are rules for sharing space.

Any nonsense and the dog is off the sofa 😂 If you annoy another dog, dive on them, sit on top of them, start licking their ears or generally can’t leave them alone, you lose couch privileges.

The dogs that are already couch pros are actually really useful because they help teach the other dogs how to be on the couch. You can be close, you can share the space, but you absolutely do not need to be sat on top of each other.

If a dog gets it wrong, they’re removed from the sofa, tethered and then we try again later. They get another opportunity later to come back into that space and make a better choice.

Who remembers Morven? One of many frenchies we have had in for board and train this year 🖤 With so many dogs in for residential training recently, I’ve fallen a bit behind on actually updating on how they’re getting on.

Morven came in with lead reactivity around other dogs, and she also had a habit of regularly going after cleaning tools whenever her mam was trying to clean. Once we got to know her properly, it became really obvious that she had a lot of drive with nowhere appropriate for it to go, so rather than just constantly trying to stop that behaviour, we gave her somewhere better to put it.

A lot of toy/play work went into her stay, alongside building a really solid recall because her owner does a lot of hiking with her, and plenty of pack walks to build her confidence and get her spending time around other dogs without everything becoming such a big deal.

We can’t forget that small dogs can come packed with a LOAD of drive too. They aren’t all naturally suited to being lap dogs, and treating them like they should be can leave a lot of those needs completely unmet.

I love residential training because we get the time to actually live with the dog, see these behaviours properly and work out what they need rather than just looking at the problem on paper.

Brace into his last weekend with us 🥹

Something we really believe in with residential training is that your dog should feel comfortable with the person they are staying with… but so should you.

You are trusting someone with your dog for a pretty big chunk of time, so you should feel comfortable asking questions, checking in and wanting to know exactly what they have been getting up to.

If something feels off, question it. Your trainer should be comfortable answering your questions, explaining what they are doing, why they are doing it and how your dog is progressing. If they aren’t, they might just not be the right fit for you.

We update owners regularly throughout their dog’s stay, with the training clips, how they are settling in, what we are seeing from them and how things are progressing.

And by this point, as you can probably tell, Brace is VERY settled 🥹

Last weekend with us before we start getting him and his owners ready for the transition back home 🐾

lots of trainers will tell you being on a long line is the same as being off lead for your dog

while long lines are an amazing tool to aid training, they shouldn’t be considered the finished picture

could summit roam so far on a line?

giving dogs full freedom to run, to play with their friends, to chase birds, knowing they will come back when you need them to is what training recall is all about for me

there’s nothing we love more than seeing dogs run 🐾

‘What’s he doing?’ ‘I dunno, but recall him’

We are big believers that dogs need opportunities for free movement, be able to run, explore, change pace, sniff, move their body properly and have freedom without us controlling every step they take.

Obviously that needs to be safe and appropriate for the dog and the environment, but I don’t want a poor recall to be the reason a dog spends its whole life attached to a lead.

Recall is a skill that we can teach and proof properly so you can start giving your dog more freedom without just crossing your fingers and hoping they come back.

A board & train shouldn’t be about turning your dog into a robot for a few weeks and handing you back something that only works while it’s under command.

We’re raising dogs to live as pets, so while they’re with us, that’s what we want them doing. They live in the house, go on walks, spend time around other dogs and learn to switch off.

They play, get their exercise, sleep and drive needs met. They make choices, get things wrong and learn what good behaviour looks like without somebody micromanaging their every move.

Your dog cannot spend 95% of its life in obedience, in a heel or a down/sit or away in a crate. I’d much rather obedience was the small percentage we use when we actually need it, and the rest of the time the dog simply knows how to behave and exist alongside you.

That’s also why I’d be wary of any residential programme that gets results by suppressing behaviour without looking at why it’s happening in the first place. If the dog’s needs aren’t being met, or the whole system relies on a level of management you could never realistically keep up at home, what happens when the dog goes back?

Arguably one of the biggest parts of a board & train is actually training you.

We try to be as transparent as possible about what we’re doing, why we’re doing it and what we’re seeing as we go. You shouldn’t collect your dog at the end and be hit with three weeks’ worth of information in one go.

The whole point is that you understand the process too, so what we’ve built here can actually transfer into your normal life.

There are some bloody brilliant board & train programmes out there, but there are also some things I’d absolutely be wary of before handing my dog over.
