November is Diabetes awareness month!
Here we have the handsome Sid π who has had quite the journey with his diabetes journey.
He was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus which is an endocrine disorder that can occur in both dogs and cats. It's due to the body producing limited or no insulin.
Insulin is a hormone created within the pancreas and its job is to move glucose from the blood into cells. Glucose is required to fuel the bodyβs cells and lack of it causes severe side effects.
The key signs of diabetes mellitus are increased appetite, increased urination, increased drinking and weight loss.
In one of Sid's photos you can see him wearing a white 'badge' this is called a Libre which is how his owners monitor his blood glucose levels to make sure his condition is being managed efficiently.
If you have any questions about this post in regard to you animal possibly showing any of these signs feel free to give us a call!
