Grief after losing a dog doesn’t arrive in one shape. It comes in shades.

There’s the anticipatory grief, when you know the goodbye is coming and every day feels heavy with the question of “when?”.
There can even be relief grief — the quiet relief that the decision is no longer yours to carry. The hardest choice has already been made, even though your heart is breaking.

Then comes the real grief.
The everyday kind.

The photo where there’s only one dog in the frame now.
The walk where you still glance towards the place they would have been.
The birthday they didn’t quite reach.
The first walk, the first holiday, the first ordinary Tuesday without them.

Those milestones hurt in ways you don’t expect.

Sometimes grief is tears that arrive out of nowhere because the absence suddenly feels enormous again. Sometimes it’s smiling at a memory that still makes you laugh. Sometimes it’s noticing all the little differences between the dogs you still have and the one you lost.

Love leaves fingerprints everywhere.

And I think that’s the price — and also the privilege — of loving animals so deeply. Most of us will outlive them. We know that from the beginning, and still we choose them anyway. Because a life shared with them is always worth the heartbreak that follows.

Maybe, in time, the memories don’t hurt quite so sharply. Maybe they become softer around the edges. But the love never really leaves and I wouldn’t want it to.

So the hand saga still continues… unfortunately my appointment with the surgeon was cancelled today.

However, I need to stay grateful, as it’s been cancelled because of an emergency — which means someone else is having a much tougher day than me right now.

Or find yourself calling their name… only to be completely ignored while they suddenly develop “selective hearing”? 👀

Loose leash walking and recall are two of the biggest struggles dog owners face — and when they aren’t taught with the right foundations, walks can quickly become stressful, frustrating and anything but enjoyable for both ends of the lead.
