☀️ Attending the Vets in Hot Weather ☀️

With the warm weather continuing, we kindly ask clients to consider rescheduling non-urgent appointments if their pet may become hot or stressed while travelling to the practice.

High temperatures can be dangerous for pets, even during short journeys. If you are concerned about travelling in the heat, please contact the practice on 01455 552117/282512 and we will be happy to rearrange your appointment.

Please remember:
🐾 Never leave pets in parked cars
🐾 Travel during cooler parts of the day where possible
🐾 Ensure pets have access to fresh water and ventilation

Thank you for helping us keep your pets safe and comfortable during the hot weather.

☀️☀️☀️

☀️ Temperatures are set to soar this Bank Holiday weekend, and while many of us will be enjoying the sunshine, the hot weather can pose serious risks to our pets.

Every year, our veterinary teams see cases of heatstroke and dehydration that can become life-threatening very quickly. Dogs, cats, rabbits and other small pets can all struggle in high temperatures, so it's important to take extra precautions to keep them safe.

🐾 Walk dogs during the cooler parts of the day
💧 Make sure pets always have access to fresh water
🌳 Provide plenty of shade and cool resting areas
🚗 Never leave pets in cars, conservatories or poorly ventilated spaces
🔥 Check pavements and artificial grass before walks to avoid burnt paws

Watch for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, wobbliness or collapse.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them somewhere cool, offer water and contact your veterinary practice immediately for advice.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine responsibly with your pets. ❤️

☀️ 🆘It is now already too warm to take your dog outside for a walk…. Or out and about anywhere else!☀️🆘

⬇️ Please have a read of our guidance below-

☀️HEATSTROKE☀️

☀️😎The weather is going to become extremely hot, especially over the bank holiday weekend and into next week!😎☀️

⚠️🦮Please be careful taking your dog for a walk in this heat.

⛔️❗️Even a ‘quick’ walk can be too much!

🖐🏻Remember hot pavements can burn paws! If it’s too hot to hold your hand down on, it’s too hot for your pet!

🐾📞If you are concerned your pet might have heat stroke please do not delay and phone your veterinary practice ASAP for professional advice.

🐶DOGS🐶

☀️Make sure they have access to the shade if outdoors, ideally keep them inside.
☀️Have access to cool fresh water throughout the day.
☀️NEVER leave your dog in a car
☀️Use cool mats, fans, wet towels for your pet to lie on.
☀️Use pet safe suncream on exposed parts of your pets skin (tips of ears and nose). Especially if your pet has white/light coloured fur.
☀️Be careful if you have artificial grass, this can cause burns to your pets feet

🐱CATS🐱

☀️Offer them cool water and replenish frequently
☀️Ensure your cats do not get trapped in sheds, conservatory’s, garages or green houses
☀️Keep them indoors where possible, in a cool ventilated room.

🐰SMALL FURRIES🐹

☀️Ensure to keep their enclosure out of direct sunlight. Move the accommodation into an area that has plenty of shade and air circulation.
☀️Offer them marble/slate/tiles/concrete slabs to lay on. You can refrigerate these and they make great cool spots for them to sit on. Cool mats work too- however make sure they don’t get nibbled!
☀️Offer them fresh cool water to drink, and replenish regularly.
☀️Wrap a frozen bottle in a tea towel and place it in their pen, it may help to reduce the air temperature
☀️Try not to handle them/fuss them too much.
☀️Please be vigilant for cases of flystrike in your rabbits.

🦔WILDLIFE🐝
Spare a thought for wild animals. Keep bowls of water out for wildlife such as birds and hedgehogs!

Signs of heatstroke:
🥵Panting excessively
🥵Breathing difficulties
🥵Excessively salivation/drooling
🥵Vomiting (dogs & cats)
🥵Restlessness
🥵Collapse
🥵Seizures
🥵Red gums

❗️ALL animals are at risk of heatstroke, although some more than others. These include:

🐾Brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, Shih Tzu, French Bulldogs etc)
🐾Puppies
🐾Geriatric dogs
🐾Overweight dogs
🐾Dogs with thick coats
🐾Animals with underlying health conditions

🌡If you suspect your dog is showing signs of heatstroke⬇️

DO
✅Move your dog to a cool/shaded area.
✅ Gently use COOL not cold water over their body.
✅Offer them small amounts of water to drink
✅Call your vets immediately if you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke

DON’T
⛔️Do not cover their body with a wet towel, this will trap the heat in.
⛔️Do not force your pet to drink, as this may lead to them aspirating, and this can cause aspiration pneumonia.
⛔️Do not use COLD/ICE water, this can cool your pet down too rapidly leading to shock.

🐾Find out more Friday🔍💚

Last but not least we would like to introduce our wonderful Head Nurse- Rachel!🐾

❓What’s your favourite part of the job? I really enjoy seeing pets being united with their owners after being with us for the day. The animals are always so happy to see their 'mum and dad' and it's a really nice thing to see!🥰

❓Do you have any pets of your own? Yes, I have a 13 year old cat called Bella. She likes to paw my face at 6am EVERY morning for breakfast🍳

❓Do you have any special interests within nursing? I have a special interest in pain management and pharmacology. I also have taken further qualifications in feline specific nursing🐈

❓Are you a dog person, cat person, or both? I love caring for both but i'm definitely a cat person if I had to choose😻

❓What’s one piece of advice you’d give to pet owners? We really do care about your pets❤️
