LOCAL NEWS ๐จ | Dog rushed to emergency vets after collapsing following swim in the River Wye in Hereford.
A 10-month-old Border Collie was rushed to the vets on Monday after collapsing just minutes after entering the River Wye in Hereford.
In a message sent to Your Herefordshire, the dog's owner said:
"She was playing in the river to cool off after a walk and within five minutes she collapsed by the riverbank.
"She wasn't responding when I called her, couldn't walk and her gums became pale. My partner had to carry her through the meadows to get her to transport because she was struggling to stay awake."
Following emergency treatment, blood tests revealed her liver enzyme levels were more than eight times higher than normal, while her potassium levels were dangerously low. She remained at the vets overnight for urgent monitoring and treatment.
The owner added:
"The river is no joke. My poor puppy is fighting toxins in her body and I wanted people to know not to risk taking their beloved dogs swimming in the water."
โ ๏ธ Experts warn that dogs can become seriously ill after swimming in rivers due to several potential risks, including:
๐บ Water intoxication from swallowing excessive amounts of water
๐บ Near-drowning or aspiration, causing fluid to enter the lungs
๐บ Exhaustion, shock, or heat-related complications
๐บ Exposure to harmful bacteria, toxins, or blue-green algae
Dog owners are urged to remain vigilant and seek immediate veterinary advice if their pet shows signs of distress after being in the water.
