Tiny sea turtles emerge from the sands of Cape Verde and make their first incredible journey towards the ocean. 🌊
But this isn’t goodbye…
Years from now, the females will return to the same beach where they were born to lay their own eggs. 🏝️

🌊🐢 Are you coming back… or are you new here?
In Cabo Verde, we’re giving nesting turtles a tiny piece of technology with a big purpose: a microchip. 💚
Each chip gives us a unique ID, helping researchers discover whether a turtle returning to the beach is a familiar face coming back to nest again—or a new turtle joining the population.

Expectation vs. Reality 🌊🐢
✨ Expectation: Golden beaches, crystal-clear water and the picture-perfect paradise you see in the travel photos.
💔 Reality: Beneath that beauty is a heartbreaking amount of plastic and rubbish washing ashore every single day.
For the turtles nesting here in Cabo Verde, this isn’t just an eyesore. They have to crawl through plastic and debris to reach their nesting sites, while some nests are found filled with plastic. We’ve also seen turtles become entangled in discarded fishing nets.
The amazing team Fundação Tartaruga carries out regular beach clean-ups, but the reality is that what we remove can be replaced by even more rubbish washing up the very next day.
This is the side of paradise that doesn’t always make it onto Instagram.
🐢 Every piece of plastic removed matters. Every clean beach gives a turtle a better chance.

Recently, a juvenile green turtle began a brand-new chapter as it was released back into the wild here in Boa Vista. 🌴🌊
From rescue and rehabilitation to that unforgettable moment when it disappears into the ocean — every release is a reminder of what we’re working to protect. 💙(All filmed on the DJI pocket osmo )

🐋 Refreshing our whale stranding training! 🌊
Yesterday was a fantastic day leading in a whale stranding refresher course I created. After completing the initial training with BDMLR last year, it’s so important to keep those skills fresh, make sure everyone remembers their training, and be ready to put it into action when needed.
We started the day with a refresher session on what to do when a whale strands, followed by hands-on practical training using the specialist equipment.
Sadly, whale strandings happen all too often here on Boa Vista. 💙 But the good news is that our team is prepared, confident, and ready to respond when the next one happens.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in keeping our team trained and ready to help these incredible animals. 🐋💙
