With only one week to go before Bristol City Councils park licence comes into effect lots of dog walkers are still in limbo.
My own application was sent 2 months ago and I haven't had a response.
Others are having their applications declined with little feedback on what needs to be done to comply.
Wording on the council website is constantly changing making it impossible for anyone to understand what is or isn't needed to apply.
But the reality is that every week I see people that call themselves professionals who, in my personal opinion, aren't behaving as responsibly as they should. You only have to read the comments on various posts to read real stories from real people about incidents they've had, or how they feel scared or intimidated by our profession.
And that makes me really sad. Sad because we aren't all like that, you just don't see us as we are utilising the quieter areas and keeping out of the way. Sad that dogs and people aren't getting the care they deserve. Sad because each bad apple impacts my business and those of my close friends.
I'm sad that friends who do their job incredibly well are saying goodbye to canine friends as they cull their group walks from 6 to 4. And I'm sad that this is because the reality is that the majority of walkers aren't able to responsibly walk that amount of dogs at once.
Something needs to be done about irresponsible walkers. To protect dogs and their owners. To protect members of the public. I totally support this and I'd actively work with the council to find constructive ways of achieving this. We should be driving up standards, we should be actively trying to improve and do better.
But next week those irresponsible people will just be carrying on. Possibly even with more dogs as they take on the dogs that have just lost the walker that they love.
I don't know the magic answer to this dilemma, but I'd appreciate your thoughts.
