**BLUETONGUE UPDATE**
We are working harder than ever to supply vaccine to all those clients that have ordered. We really appreciate the support, patience and courtesy we have been shown at such a desperate time. Our message is still to vaccinate all susceptible stock, all sheep and breeding cattle should be prioritised. We hope to have better news on vaccine supply next week but in the meantime it would be really helpful if those that intend to vaccinate could place orders as soon as possible in order that we have the best chance of supply. Please don't forget that this is a notifiable disease and as such if you have suspicion of disease then it should be reported.

A Somerset vet at the heart of the bluetongue hotspot says vaccine demand is now outstripping supply as cases continue to climb in the region.

Farmers are being urged to contact their vet now and join waiting lists if necessary.

🐑 Ram fertility testing and Ram vasectomy (teaser making) day next Monday 10th August at the practice 🐑

With ram sales now upon us, we should be mindful of checking our stock tups for fertility. The importance of a fertile tup can’t be stressed enough.

The Ram MOT/fertility testing includes a full health check and semen analysis to make sure they are fit and ready to go for the breeding season.
The test will be priced at £30 per tup, and a result to be given on the day.

Teasers are a great way to help achieve a tight lambing block. We are performing vasectomies on the day so if you want to "make your own" teaser rather than buying them in then this is a great time to do so. The best candidates to become teasers are the most recognisable rams (which are not good for breeding) so they can't get mixed up with your actual rams!
Ram vasectomies are priced at £80 (exc vat).

🚨 Haemonchus warning 🚨
It's faecal egg count time of year again! Something we're seeing more and more of is Haemonchus contortus or "barbers pole worm" which is a blood sucking worm most commonly affecting sheep and goats. Adult female haemonchus worms can produce a large number of eggs per day, and so we suspect haemonchus when we have high egg count- often well into the thousands! We are able to confirm Haemonchus eggs on our in house faecal egg count machine for a speedy diagnosis.
These results are from a sick sheep recently seen by Vet Caitee, who she diagnosed with Haemonchus using a faecal sample.
Affected animals can be weak or collapsed, have bottle jaw, and become severely anaemic and so famacha scoring of mucous membranes is used in diagnosis and control of Haemonchus. Sudden death is unfortunately common in acute infections.
