Bit fittings for two lovely horses today — Baby and Treasure. 🐴 ✨

Both had gadgets removed and were fitted with simpler bits, and both looked so much more relaxed, with lower head carriages and far less fiddling in the mouth. You really can’t ask for more than that! 👌🏼

Here’s Treasure, with his noseband removed. We swapped his lozenge bit for one where the joins sit flat on the tongue rather than poking upwards — sometimes a simple change is all that’s needed. 🩵 💫

Charlie & Fya 🦄 ✨

A change of horse for Charlie while her own is out of ridden work. Fya is still green, but it was lovely to see them figure each other out and finish the lesson working really nicely together 💫

Is anyone else’s horses feeling the effects of all this green grass at the moment? 🫠🦄

Roo has been a bit more lethargic than normal lately, so I’m pretty sure the grass is having an effect on him. I still want to do something with him and keep him moving, but don’t want to overdo it.

We’ve been using some of the exercises from V.C Equine Performance & Partnership Posture Programme, which have been really useful. I can just pick a few exercises or stretches depending on how he’s feeling that day, so we’re still doing something productive without asking too much. ✨

This week we’ve done a few targeted exercises and stretches, which is great as it means I don’t feel like we have to have a full-on training session every time. I also popped his bridle on and we went for a gentle in-hand walk just to mix things up a bit.

Sometimes just doing a little bit, keeping his brain engaged and working on his posture and strength is enough. 🤍🧡

Choosing a first bit for a youngster 🦄

For me, a first bit should be something they accept, understand and feel comfortable in — not something they spend the whole time chomping or playing with.

I wouldn’t put anything in a youngster’s mouth that I wouldn’t be happy putting in my own horses’ mouths.

I like to start my youngsters in a loose-ring barrel, letting them wear it with a headstall bridle whilst tied up to get used to the feel. Once they’re comfortable, I’ll usually progress to the fixed-side version. ✨

Of course, every horse is different, but I like first bits to be soft, simple and uncomplicated. The aim is to help them accept the contact and eventually reach towards it.

That’s exactly what we did with Royalty — we tried a couple of simple options and let her guide us towards what she was most comfortable in. 🤍

I can’t wait to go back once she has her new saddle and join them on their ridden journey! 🫶🏻
