Body Condition Scoring (BCS)📏

This is a standardised tool to help determine if an animal is overweight, ideal weight or underweight while taking into account body fat, muscle coverage and overall health.

On the average, ideal, patient you should easily be able to feel the ribs, a tucked waist when viewed from above and a tucked abdomen when viewed from the side. This would be an ideal score of 4-5 out of 9.

When examined in practice, the vet or nurse will make an assessment based on feeling and looking at your pet instead of just looking at their weight on the scales to make a comprehensive assessment. If a pet is rated higher or lower than an ideal score, you may be referred to one of our veterinary nurses for a weight clinic to assess current diet and lifestyle.
