This Diabetes Week, we’d like to raise awareness of diabetes in pets. 🐾

Diabetes can affect both cats and dogs, and although it needs careful management, many diabetic pets can continue to enjoy a good quality of life with the right support.

Signs to look out for include:

🐾 Drinking more than usual

🐾 Urinating more often

🐾 Weight loss despite a good appetite

🐾 Lethargy or seeming more tired than normal

If you’ve noticed any changes in your pet, please don’t ignore them. Early diagnosis can make a big difference.

Our team is here to help with advice, and our nurse clinics include advice on diabetes and training for home-medicating pets with insulin.

Just like people, senior pets can develop high blood pressure, yet the warning signs are often silent. Persistently raised blood pressure can damage eyes, kidneys and even the brain, leading to vision loss, organ strain and sudden strokes.

A simple, stress-free cuff placed around a paw or tail lets us measure those numbers in minutes while your pet enjoys a cuddle and a few treats.

Regular checks mean we can spot changes early, adjust medication or diet and keep those vital organs healthy for longer.

Is your golden oldie due for a quick blood pressure check at their next visit? 🩺🐾

June is National Microchipping Month, so it’s a great reminder to check your pet’s chip details are up to date. 🐾

Microchipping gives lost pets the best chance of being reunited with their families, but it only works if your contact details are correct.

Dogs must be microchipped by 8 weeks old, and cats must be microchipped by 20 weeks old.

If you’re unsure whether your pet’s details are up to date, get in touch with us, and we’ll be happy to help.

Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is one of the most common causes of ongoing itchiness in dogs, and is usually linked to environmental allergies, such as pollen, dust mites, and moulds. It often starts when dogs are young.

Many dogs with CAD show:
🐾 Constant scratching, rubbing, or licking, especially of the paws
🐾 Red or inflamed skin
🐾 Recurrent ear infections or head shaking
🐾 Chewing the legs, belly, or armpits
🐾 “Hot spots” or skin infections that keep coming back

There’s no single quick test to diagnose it. Diagnosis usually involves a full history, tests to rule out other conditions and, in some cases, allergy testing.

Although CAD is a chronic condition, it can be managed. Treatment can include:
🐶 Flea prevention
🐶 Medicated shampoos/skin barrier support
🐶 Anti-itch and anti-inflammatory medication tailored to your dog
🐶 Treatment of any secondary infections
🐶 Allergy immunotherapy (“allergy shots/drops”) for some dogs

If your dog is licking their paws, scratching daily, or getting repeat ear infections, get in touch with us!
