Firework season tips 🎆

Giving your dog something to focus on can help take their mind off the noise 🎧

Aim for something that gets them chewing, licking or sniffing, and that they find tasty enough to keep their attention. Just make sure the activity is not too difficult for your dog: anxious dogs can give up if it takes too much effort to get the food.

Some options:
🥜 A kong, lickmat or shallow slow feeder with your dog’s favourite fillings ❄️ Freezing makes them last longer!
📦 A snuffle box (treats scattered in a box of paper or cardboard scraps ✂️🗞️)
🦴 Long-lasting chews (raw marrow or knuckle bones, air-dried leg bones or your dog’s favourite natural chew)

It’s good to have these items on hand during firework season even if your dog hasn’t had an issue with fireworks before. Unfortunately, sound sensitivity in dogs can develop for a range of reasons, and at any time!

✂️ Using the wrong clippers can make nail trims unpleasant for your dog or cat.

Blunt blades, or clippers that are the wrong size for the nail, won’t give a clean cut. The nail bends and gets squashed rather than being cut straight through, which can hurt.

Clippers generally blunt after a year or two of regular use. Replace them (or the blades, if yours allow it) at that point, or sooner if the cuts aren’t clean.

Match the clippers to the nail. Puppies and cats have thin, soft, flexible nails, so small clippers made for cats or small animals work best. Adult dogs need adult clippers, with larger ones for big breeds with thick nails, such as shepherds, labs and collies, and smaller ones for small breeds. 🐾

We’re often asked about ball launchers 🎾

They make picking up a ball & throwing much easier, and for some owners that’s really needed. For many of us, though, it means fetch can easily be overdone, which can take a toll on our dogs. Swipe 👉 to see why we’re cautious about them, and what we suggest instead 🐾

We’re approaching firework season so over the next couple of weeks we will be sharing some tips on how to help your dog feel more settled on those nights 🎆

Create safe spaces for dogs to retreat to. This might be their bed or crate, or under a table or chairs 🐾 Let your dog choose to go there, and make sure they can always choose to come out again.

Add blankets etc to make the space more cosy and/or sheltered 😴 Some dogs like to burrow under blankets, while others prefer them draped over something (like a table) to create a den (leave one side open for airflow).

You can also add calming products to help the space feel more relaxing 🧘🏻 For example, try spritzing the bed or blanket with Reiki & Herb’s calming spray 💨 Keep the herb pot nearby for your dog to help themselves to - or sprinkle the mixture in their safe space! They can then choose to sniff or eat the herbal mixture if they need it.

Tiffany in her Bubblegum after her harness fitting today 🩷

She went for a walk straight after the fitting…and it wasn’t long before she led her family right back to the shop 😂 Seems she enjoyed being here 🥰

Stocked up on snacks before heading out again (fish cubes and beef lung from our were a massive hit!) 🛍️

Her pawrents mentioned the new harness feels much more secure than the one they’d been using before, and that Tiffany seems more comfortable in it 🐕‍🦺🙌
