This is the behaviour I would reward.

So often, we're looking for the big stuff - the whiplash recall, the perfect heel-walking. But we rarely get those things without capturing those tiny, *unprompted* good decisions that come before, the decisions to disengage from something interesting, the choice to turn around, come back and hang out nearby for a couple of seconds. These good decisions are where learning can happen SO quickly - if we're looking for them and ready to reinforce our dogs.

As a dog trainer, my brain is constantly scanning for ways to reinforce desirable behaviour - what gets rewarded gets repeated - so of course I will pay my dogs well when they offer a behaviour I want to see more of! Lazy dog training maybe, but it's super effective, and who doesn't love an easy win?!

Crucially, I don't want to always be asking for every behaviour - I want my dog to be able to make good decisions himself, without constant guidance from me.

Now this might not be practical for every behaviour, but if we can capture our dogs making a great choice and reinforce them for it, we'll see more of that behaviour in the future!

Keep an eye out for these little moments when you can reinforce great behaviour - and remember, what gets rewarded gets repeated!

It's hard having a dog with extra needs - trust me, I really, really get it! But you love them, so you keep on going, even when things feel SO hard...doesn't mean you have to keep on going on your own though 🩵🐾
