Meet Bo 🐾🐾🐾

Today I had the pleasure of meeting this little lady. People might say I have an obsession with dachshunds, and they're not wrong. Small but mighty is the only way to describe them.

All dogs need purpose, or they find a job for themselves. Bo's mission is to alert loudly and persistently to outside threats, like blowing leaves and the dog who lives behind the house.

Training begins with exercises that relieve her of this responsibility.

Through training we can harness her individual skill set, creating success and a deep desire to engage in new, meaningful tasks.

Meet Lefki 🐾🐾
Lefki is a beautiful rescue girl from Greece. A few months ago, even walking through the front door was a big emotional hurdle for her, and she's since adapted beautifully 💛 Lately she's been taking food off the countertop and collecting the children's toys and taking them to her den. I wonder if it's a little regression to a time when food was scarce, and found items were precious.
Her exercises:
✅ Food control. Lefki is cued to sit near out-of-bounds food while her owner moves away. We are asking her to wait, ignore the food on the plate, and earn an equally high-value reward. Building on impulse control and clear boundaries.
✅ Her own treasure box. Collecting seems to matter to her, so we're working with it. She has her own toys to find and take back to her den, with no conflict over things she shouldn't have.

Sniffing taps into the brain's seeking system, which is driven by dopamine, the chemical behind anticipation and reward. Research has also found that dogs who do regular nosework become more optimistic in their outlook. It builds confidence and strengthens your relationship too.

Getting started is easy. Scatter a few treats in a snuffle mat or hide them in some cardboard boxes, and let your dog work it out.

A birthday shout out to these two. Otis and Peggy. They are a delightful pair. I took my son’s girlfriend to see my new puppy peg, and she fell in love with Otis. Although they live apart, they love to see each other, they know they are connected.

Meet Bentley 🐾🐾
Bentley is the most handsome pup, and super clever, he has some issues with self regulation when visitors come, or when he meets the people he loves the most.
Today we explored resilience building exercises, and how his body language is communicating with us along with, what we need to do to in the environment to help him.

Look at this beautiful little creation, this was found on the field at the training venue over the weekend. Just look at how resourceful the little birds are, that make them. There are horses and sheep that live around the venue. There are definitely long hairs some little bits of wool, but there is definitely a little dog down in this nest. We often have dogs who shed when the weather changes. As spring hits, and you brush the dogs out leave what’s collected it in the garden, or somewhere the birds can find it. 🐥🐾🐾🐾

This morning we worked retrieval — he’s right at the start of that journey, but the instinct is clearly there. As he grows, this simple game will expand into more challenging retrieval exercises.

We also ran recalls two ways: one ending in “find it” (a scrap of bacon did the trick 🥓), one ending in a sit.

This is how we build engagement on walks — we provide the entertainment, not the environment.

Back out with Alfie today, I managed to get him to leave me long enough to call him in.
Recalls are a big worry for new puppy owners, but how do we train it, if we don’t let them off.
Start small, small distances, known and predictable environments, big rewards! Play-food-you and the fun you bring.
The recall is dependent on what your relationship is with your dog, and what you offer as motivation for behaviour.
It’s not the dog’s not doing what you want, it is that you are not offering anything the dog wants. 🐾🐾
