Alfie 🐾🐾🐾
This morning we worked retrieval — he’s right at the start of that journey, but the instinct is clearly there. As he grows, this simple game will expand into more challenging retrieval exercises.

We also ran recalls two ways: one ending in “find it” (a scrap of bacon did the trick 🥓), one ending in a sit.

This is how we build engagement on walks — we provide the entertainment, not the environment.

Grief

We talk openly about the pain of losing a person. But when it’s a dog — a life we’ve loved, cared for, and built trust with every single day — that grief doesn’t always get the same space to be spoken about, or felt.

Anyone who has lived and worked closely with a dog knows that bond runs deep. Built over time through love, trust, and respect, and when that bond comes to an end, the loss can feel just as painful as losing someone close to us.

If you or someone you know is grieving the loss of an animal, recognise it, acknowledge it, and be kind as they navigate through it — because that grief is real, and it deserves care.

Back out with Alfie today, I managed to get him to leave me long enough to call him in.
Recalls are a big worry for new puppy owners, but how do we train it, if we don’t let them off.
Start small, small distances, known and predictable environments, big rewards! Play-food-you and the fun you bring.
The recall is dependent on what your relationship is with your dog, and what you offer as motivation for behaviour.
It’s not the dog’s not doing what you want, it is that you are not offering anything the dog wants. 🐾🐾

I was hoping to get Alfie to show you what a great recall looks like, today he didn’t fancy straying too far from where I was. Which is exactly the point, training is best when it’s not training at all. Alfie is consistently reinforced for making good choices when we are out. He has the option for freedom but chooses to stay close. He will get older and bolder, we may have to work through those emotions when they come. Right now, good choices mean enjoying stress free walks; with a dog who is not restrained. Puppies need to learn recall before emotions and hormones make it harder for them to listen — so start early.🐾🐾🐾🐾

Meet Alfie 🐾🐾

Today we worked on proofing behaviour, it’s easy to think that training accomplished in the kitchen or in the living room, means the puppy understands commands like sit down and stay. To ensure full understanding, taking this training out and about in lots of different environments is key.

Meet Murphy🐾🐾

Today I spent some time with this very handsome Labrador pup and his owners Lydia and Rosie.
Not only is he handsome but he is super clever. We looked at recall and engagement ideas whilst out.
What we need to remember when we are out is, we are in competition with everything around us, if we don’t entertain our dogs they will find ways to entertain themselves, and likely drive us mad doing it. This trio have some great ideas, to have the maximum fun together, out on a walk. They are going to have a blast. 🐾🐾💥
