Because horse teeth continually erupt, one missing tooth causes a huge issue - there is no opposing grinding surface. Without regular rasps (or “floats”, depending on where in the world you are), a tooth with nothing opposing it will end up digging into the soft tissue. This tooth had got so long that a rasp couldn’t even fit under it, so conservative treatment wasn’t an option. It needed to come out for the pony’s comfort. Although he was not showing any obvious signs of oral discomfort & was eating well, there’s no doubt being this “long in the tooth” 😉 damage inside his mouth showed it must have been painful.

Sam discovered Lily had an extra tooth right at the back of her mouth when he started seeing her for regular remedial dentistry treatment. For a long time it could be managed conservatively, but a decline in periodontal disease and increased food trapping began causing discomfort when eating. Xrays revealed infection had started to get to the root of the tooth, and extraction was warranted.
It is challenging when working on the ’11’ cheek teeth because of how far back they are - so 11a was even more tricky!
Lily is now much more comfortable without her extra tooth and no longer struggling to eat.

Vet student gets to do the big reveal!

We receive lots of requests for student placements, but as a small one-vet practice we’re only able to take on a limited number of final-year veterinary students each year.

For those looking for placements, here are a few tips that can help your application stand out:

- Research the practice before you apply. Avoid generic emails addressed to “To whom it may concern” or “Dear Sir/Madam”. A personalised email goes a long way.

- Show genuine interest in the work the practice does. If you’re applying to a dental practice, make sure your email reflects that!

- Tell us what you can bring to the placement. What experience do you have? How can you help? What are you hoping to learn?

- Remember that placements are a two-way relationship. Most vets are happy to support students because others did the same for them when they were training. Enthusiasm, gratitude and a willingness to get involved make a huge difference.

- Make the most of every opportunity. Introduce yourself to clients, help clean up, take up offers to perform a clinical examination, ask questions and get stuck in.

The students who leave the best impression aren’t necessarily the ones who know the most—they’re the ones who are engaged, helpful and keen to learn.

This horse was extremely head shy, hated having a bit in his mouth & had extremely smelly breath. Whilst the horse had received regular routine dentals, by the time Sam was called, advanced EOTRH was diagnosed with all incisors severely affected. EOTRH (Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption & Hypercementosis) is an extremely painful condition that requires X-rays to diagnose, regular monitoring and the extraction of affected teeth. Horses without any incisors can graze & eat hay much more comfortably than horses suffering with infection-riddled wobbly teeth.

NEW DENTAL DISCOUNT SCHEME!
We are now offering a discount scheme to our routine dental clients for advanced procedures that may be required at any time whilst under our care (provided pathology is not identified at the first dental visit). A 10-20% discount (depending on procedure type) applies as long as routine dental checks are booked with us at the recommended intervals. Procedures eligible for the discount include Xrays, diastema widening, restorations and extractions (not including wolf teeth).

Sam can perform further investigations and many advanced treatments at your yard (sometimes at the same time as your routine appointment if anything untoward is discovered), otherwise our clinic is at Copper Beech Farm in Portbury.
