A dog that WANTS to listen will always be easier to train than a dog that is simply being controlled.

Strong relationships are built through engagement, motivation and positive interaction.

If you want your puppy to walk happily like this… 👇

One of the most important things I focus on early is encouraging a nice high head carriage throughout the walk.

Every single one of these puppies is looking up and staying engaged 🙌🏻

Puppies that walk with their head up naturally stay far more connected and engaged with us throughout the walk.

Three things that really help encourage that:

An encouraging and motivating voice

Small changes in speed and direction to naturally keep your puppy checking back in with you

And lots of praise whenever they are engaged and on task

The more enjoyable and rewarding you make the walk, the more your puppy starts wanting to walk with you.

“How hot is TOO hot for dogs? 🐶☀️”

Honestly, it’s not always as simple as just looking at the temperature.

Breed, age, fitness levels, humidity, direct sunlight and even the ground temperature can all make a huge difference when it comes to how safely a dog can cope in warmer weather.

Every summer you’ll see people online shouting “don’t walk your dogs in the heat” and while sometimes the message gets lost, there are real reasons behind it.

Dogs cannot regulate body temperature like we can and overheating can happen surprisingly quickly, especially with certain breeds or dogs that love to keep pushing through excitement.

So rather than focusing on one exact temperature, we need to look at the full picture and use common sense with the individual dog in front of us.

With the hotter weather arriving, here are a few safer alternatives to help keep your dogs happy while also keeping them cool:

☀️ Early morning or late evening walks
🧠 Sniffy enrichment and scatter feeding indoors
🧊 Frozen Kongs and lick mats
💦 Paddling pools and water play
🎾 Short training sessions inside the house or garden

And honestly, if in doubt, missing one walk is far safer than risking your dog overheating.

Use common sense, know your individual dog, and stay safe ☀️🐶

Can fewer dog walks actually create a happier dog? 🤔

One of the biggest mistakes owners make is assuming that more and more walking is always the answer.

For many dogs, especially high drive dogs, endless walking can actually create a dog that becomes fitter, more stimulated and harder to switch off.

A lot of dogs are not just lacking exercise.
They are lacking fulfilment.

Games that involve searching, chasing, tug, problem solving, engagement and using their brain can often leave dogs feeling far more satisfied than another hour marching around the streets.

And the best part?

A lot of these activities involve interacting directly with you.

That means we are not just tiring the dog out.
We are also building value in the owner, improving engagement and strengthening the relationship at the same time.

A fulfilled dog is often a calmer dog.
And a dog that enjoys interacting with you is usually much easier to live and train with.

Does your dog 💩 inside the house? 😭

Here’s how I solved their issue as a dog trainer 💭

Firstly, when you take your dog outside to toilet, avoid constantly talking to them or interacting with them too much.

A lot of dogs become distracted by us and forget what they actually went outside to do in the first place.

Instead, stay fairly neutral and calm, keep moving and allow them time to sniff and wander, and then only praise and reward once they are completely finished.

The next thing I would do is create a solid feeding routine.

Feeding at random times often creates random toilet habits, whereas consistent feeding helps create much more predictability around when your dog is likely to need the toilet.

Finally, for at least a week, I would create a simple toilet chart and write down:
• What time they went
• Whether it was a poo or wee
• Whether it was inside or outside

This very quickly starts creating a pattern, which then allows us to begin taking them out at the times they are most likely to need to go.

Simple changes like this can make toilet training much clearer and much easier for both you and your dog.

“How do I stop my puppy crying in the crate?” 😩

This puppy went from howling, screaming and being completely unable to settle…

To fast asleep within 5 minutes of me leaving.

And then repeating the exact same thing again later that same day without me even being there.

So how did we achieve it?

We made sure that before even thinking about putting him into the crate, every single one of his needs had already been met.

Firstly, we made sure he had been to the toilet properly and was completely empty.

Secondly, he had already had his food, so we knew his belly was full and content.

Thirdly, he had been given dedicated playtime and enrichment beforehand, so he had an outlet for his energy and stimulation.

And finally, he had already been awake for over 90 minutes, meaning biologically he should have been tired and ready for sleep.

We then added a warm, cosy blanket into the crate to help him feel safe and comfortable.

All of these things collectively helped him settle and properly switch off for the first time.

Often with puppies, the goal is not to “force” sleep.

The goal is to remove as many reasons for them NOT to sleep, so we give them the best possible chance of being able to settle and rest.
Happy puppy, happy owner 😀

Do you have puppy guilt? 👇

Not sure what to teach…
Not sure where to start…
Feeling like you should be doing more…

Honestly, most overwhelmed puppy owners are trying to do far too much at once.

You see endless videos online telling you your puppy should already know:
• perfect obedience
• fancy tricks
• advanced training
• perfect socialisation
• calmness everywhere
• neutrality around everything

…and suddenly it feels like you’re failing if your puppy simply sits still for 3 seconds.

The truth?

If you focus on just 3 areas first, life with your dog becomes SO much easier.

1. Lead walking

Because nobody enjoys being dragged around every single day.

2. Recall

Because having a dog that wants to come back to you gives you freedom and confidence.

3. Settling at home

This is the one people massively underestimate.

A puppy that cannot switch off and relax indoors becomes mentally exhausting very quickly.

Everything else is honestly just a bonus.

The owners who enjoy their dogs the most usually are not the ones with the fanciest obedience…

They are the ones whose dogs are enjoyable to actually LIVE with day to day.

Keep it simple.
Don’t over complicate it.
Build a dog that is enjoyable to live with first.

NEVER allow your dogs on the sofa…. 👀

Unless you want to.

My dogs are very clearly under the impression that the sofa belongs to them and honestly, most of the time, I’m completely okay with that.

In all seriousness though, having your dogs on the sofa is not automatically a problem.

The internet sometimes makes owners feel like every little thing they do is creating behavioural issues when in reality that simply isn’t true.

You should enjoy the time you get to spend with your dogs. Relaxing with them, cuddling them and simply spending quality time together can actually be hugely relationship building and ultimately that’s what a lot of this is all about.

The only time I would normally advise against dogs being on the sofa is if there is an actual issue surrounding it. For example, resource guarding or if your puppy is constantly using it to do parkour 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

At that point we may need clearer structure and management around furniture access.

But outside of that, enjoy your dogs.

Even if they somehow take up the entire sofa.

WANT YOUR PUPPY WALKING LIKE THIS?

If you want your puppy walking nicely on the lead, start by making the sessions EASY and ENGAGING.

To begin with, choose a really low distraction environment where your puppy can actually focus on you successfully.

Your driveway.
Outside your house.
A quiet road.
Your garden.

The easier it is for your puppy to engage with you…

The faster we start building value in the relationship.

Then keep the sessions SHORT.

One minute.
Two minutes.
Maybe three if they’re doing really well.

That’s it.

Because short sessions allow us to keep enthusiasm, focus and motivation high from start to finish.

During those sessions:

Use your voice.
Change pace.
Reward eye contact.
Move with energy.
Use food.
Use toys.

And make sure your puppy sees those rewards BEFORE you begin so they clearly understand what they are working for.

The goal isn’t just getting from A to B.

The goal is teaching your puppy that staying connected to you is rewarding and enjoyable.

Once that relationship and engagement starts becoming stronger…

Everything becomes easier afterwards.

Recall.
Focus.
Lead walking.
Ignoring distractions.

Relationship first.
Lead walking will follow!!!!

STOP ✋🏻🛑 collecting puppies late.

Most new puppy owners focus on the drive home…

But the time you collect your puppy can genuinely shape how that entire first night goes.

An early collection gives your puppy time to actually process the change before bedtime.

New smells.
New people.
New house.
New routine.
New sleeping area.

That’s a LOT for a young puppy in one day.

If we collect earlier, we have time to:
• start toilet training properly
• introduce the crate gradually
• build calmness
• create positive interactions
• prevent overtired chaos before bed

Late collections often create the opposite.

The puppy arrives overwhelmed, exhausted, overexcited, and then suddenly gets expected to settle for the night in a completely unfamiliar environment.

That first night then becomes harder for everybody.

Now obviously sometimes collection times are out of our control with breeders, travel, work etc.

But where possible, earlier is usually better.

A calmer evening nearly always leads to a better first night.

Receiving emails like this following training sessions feels amazing. Being able to walk our dogs nicely on a lead seems like such a basic thing, but often can be the cause of so much upset and frustration. Thankfully with Macey now walking like a dream her owners can enjoy all of the simple things they want to on their holiday! 🐶🦮😀
