Most people don’t know that dog training in the UK is completely unregulated. Anyone can call themselves a trainer tomorrow, no qualifications needed. You can have millions of followers and not a single credential to your name.

I qualified through PACT, one of only a handful of courses recognised by the Animal Behaviour and Training Council. It took a year of assessed theory and practical work, and it means I’m bound by a code of conduct: science-based, non-punitive methods only. No fear, no force, no shortcuts.

So before you take advice from anyone online (me included), it’s worth asking one question: what are your qualifications?

Five minutes of this does more for her than a longer walk would.

Enrichment like this should be part of the daily routine, not a treat for special occasions. It doesn’t need to be clever or cost anything, it just needs to give her brain something to do.

Working with Ziggy on her drop, always a bit of a challenge with Staffies using two of her favourite Tug-E-Nuff toys actually makes this so much easier to teach.

The key is making the toy in your hand irresistible just as the one in play goes dead. Losing one thing doesn’t mean fun is over - it means something even better is coming. We taught this indoors first, and now look at her outside.

Staffies get labelled as terrible pullers and the standard fix is ‘corrections’ (shorthand for yanking the dog’s neck on the lead).

For a breed with a short, thick neck and that much muscle behind it, jerking on the lead is genuinely risky for the spine.

Same dog, three days apart. No corrections, no force, just clear teaching and a hand lure that faded out fast.

Positive reinforcement isn’t instant, but it’s a lot quicker than people think, and a lot kinder than the alternative. And it’s more effective in the long run

Full disclosure, I’m a bit biased on this one. I share my life with a Staffie called Ziggy Staffdust (spot the Bowie fan) who you’ll be seeing plenty of across my feed. Living with a Staffie is its own thing, and this breed gets misjudged more than most. Here’s what’s actually going on with them.
