Recent studies have shown an increase in infectious diseases among British wild birds, including trichomonosis, a condition that can be extremely harmful to finches. With this in mind, we recommend anyone feeding wild birds to follow practical advice from national bodies such as the RSPB. Only use fresh, clean foods that have been specifically designed for the feeding of wild birds. Swap out food and water regularly to prevent it becoming damp or stale, which can lead to a buildup of bacteria. Also, try not to use feeders with feeding trays to prevent buildup of faeces or other infectants, and always disinfect your feeders or feeding stations at least once a week.
Follow the latest guidelines and information about the disease that's affecting Greenfinches in the UK, as well as what you can do to counter the spread and protect the birds.
