Hydration Awareness Month💧🐾

One of the simplest ways to help your dog stay hydrated is by adding a little water to their meals.

Whether they eat kibble, wet food or raw, it's an easy way to increase their fluid intake, especially during warmer weather.

For an extra cooling treat, simply pop it in the freezer before serving. It helps keep them cool, slows down fast eaters and provides a little extra enrichment too.

Here's Ralph enjoying his frozen kibble in the sunshine! ☀️🐶

Hydration Awareness Month💧🐾

Instead of reaching for the shelf ‘doggy ice creams’, one of my favourite frozen treats to make is goat’s milk with some frozen fruit.
Goat’s milk is:
✔️ Naturally rich in probiotics to help support a healthy gut.
✔️ Easier for many dogs to digest than cow’s milk.
✔️ A source of vitamins and minerals including calcium, potassium and B vitamins.
✔️ An easy way to encourage a little extra fluid intake during warmer weather.

Simply mix goat’s milk powder with water (following the instructions), pour into moulds or a lick mat, add some dog-safe fruit such as blueberries, strawberries or banana, then freeze 🍓🫐🍌

The possibilities are endless too! You could also try:
🥣 Bone broth frozen into cubes or moulds.
🥄 Greek yoghurt with a splash of water.
🫐 Water with blueberries or other dog-safe fruits frozen inside.
🦴 Frozen enrichment toys filled with your dog’s favourite hydrating ingredients.

Do you have any frozen homemade treats your pup loves? Pop them in the comments!👇🏼🐾

Lost Pet Prevention Month

📣 Why do I recommend teaching a whistle recall?

If you've ever been out with me, you'll know I'm a big fan of whistle recall, and there's a few good reasons why...

🐾 It's universal.
The same whistle pattern always means the same thing, no matter who's using it. Whether it's you, me while your dog is out with the pack, or another trusted family member, your dog is hearing the exact same cue every time.

🐾 It carries much further than your voice.
On a windy day, across an open field, or if you've lost your voice (or you're simply panicking), a whistle is much more likely to be heard than shouting your dog's name.

🐾 It's one clear cue.
We all tend to say different things when calling our dogs… "Come!", "Here!", "This way!", their name, or even a combination of all of them! A whistle removes that inconsistency, so your dog learns that one sound always means the same thing: return to me.

Of course, a whistle doesn't magically create a reliable recall—it still needs to be taught and practised just like any other cue. But once it's built up, it can become one of the most valuable skills your dog has.

➡️ In my next post, I'll show you exactly how I introduce whistle recall and the first simple steps you can start practising at home. 🐾

Hydration Awareness Month💧🐾

With the warmer weather sticking around, it’s the perfect time to think about keeping our dogs hydrated.

I spotted these “dog ice creams” in Home Bargains🍦

They look like a fun way to help cool your dog down, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with offering one as an occasional treat.

But… it’s always worth turning the packet over.

When you look at the ingredients, they’re made up mostly of meat and animal derivatives, cereals, flavourings and preservatives. They’re more of a novelty treat than a nutritious way to boost hydration.

It’s a little like us having a McFlurry and expecting the benefits of a watermelon! 🍉🍦

Instead, why not make something that’s just as tasty, naturally hydrating and packed with ingredients that can actually benefit your dog?

👀 Come back soon to see what we’ve been making…

Lost Pet Prevention Month 🏡🐾

If I could choose one skill that could make the biggest difference if a dog ever got into trouble, it would be a reliable recall.

It's a skill that lets us give our dogs some freedom away from us but it also gives them the best chance of getting back to us if the unexpected happens.

Recall needs regular practice:
🐶 Reward great recalls
🌳 Practise in different places
🎉 Make coming back to you fun
🐕 Use a long line while building reliability

I teach and encourage whistle recall to all my pack members as it can be a really powerful tool in an emergency.

No recall is ever 100% guaranteed, so good training and sensible management go hand in hand.

In my next post, I’ll explain why I recommend whistle recall and how to start working towards it ➡️

Hydration Awareness Month💧🐾

With the recent heatwaves, keeping our dogs hydrated has never been more important.
Unlike us, dogs can't cool themselves by sweating. They rely on panting, which means they lose water much more quickly and can become dehydrated faster in hot weather.

Staying well hydrated helps to:
💧 Regulate body temperature.
🫀 Support healthy circulation and organ function.
🦴 Keep joints lubricated.
🍖 Aid digestion.
🚽 Support kidney and urinary health.
⚡ Keep them feeling happy, healthy and ready for adventures!

Hydration is about more than just a water bowl (although that's always essential!). There are plenty of simple, fun ways to help your dog increase their fluid intake during warmer weather.

I'll be sharing ideas to help keep your dog cool, hydrated and enriched all summer long ☀️
