Treats are a useful part of life with our dogs, whether we're rewarding good choices, practising training or simply giving them something enjoyable.

🌿 The trick is making them work as part of your dog's overall diet.

🐶 A few things worth remembering:

🥩 Small pieces can be just as rewarding as large ones. Your dog doesn't need a huge treat every time they get something right.

🍖 Training treats add up! If you're using lots throughout the day, remember to account for them alongside your dog's regular meals.

🐾 Choose treats that suit your dog. Consider the ingredients, size and texture, as well as any individual dietary needs.

⚖️ Keep an eye on the bigger picture. Treats should complement a balanced diet rather than gradually replace too much of it.

And remember, rewards don't always have to be food. Praise, play, a favourite sniffing spot or the chance to do something your dog enjoys can be rewarding too.

🎆 Fireworks season is approaching – is your dog prepared? 🐾

While fireworks can be exciting for us, the sudden bangs, flashes and unpredictable noises can be frightening for many dogs. The good news is there are things we can do to help them feel safer. 💙

🌿 Here are some ways to make fireworks season easier for your dog:

🏡 Create a safe space
Choose a quiet room where your dog feels comfortable. Their bed, familiar blankets and favourite things can help them feel secure. Let them choose where they feel safest.

🎵 Mask the noise
Close windows and curtains, and try putting on the television, radio or some gentle music to help soften the sound of fireworks.

🐾 Stay calm and reassuring
If your dog seeks comfort, it's absolutely fine to offer affection and reassurance. You won't reinforce fear by comforting your dog when they're frightened.

🚶 Walk before dark
Where possible, take your dog out earlier in the day, before fireworks are likely to start. Keep them securely on a lead, as even familiar dogs can bolt when startled.

🦴 Offer something enjoyable
If your dog is comfortable enough, a favourite chew, lick mat or food-based activity may help them settle. Never force them to engage if they're too worried.

💙 Let your dog choose
Some dogs want to hide, others want to stay close to you. Allow them to cope in their own way rather than forcing them out of their safe space.

⚠️ Plan ahead
If your dog becomes severely distressed by fireworks, speak to us about natural calmers or in extreme cases to your vet before the season gets underway. They can advise on appropriate support, including medication where necessary.

🐾 Is your dog really trying to be the boss?

You've probably heard someone describe a dog as dominant because they pull on the lead, jump up at people or refuse to do what they're asked.

But here's the thing: these behaviours don't automatically mean your dog is trying to take charge.

🌿 Dogs behave in certain ways for a reason.

🐕 Jumping up might be an attempt to get attention or greet someone excitedly.

🐕 Pulling on the lead might simply get them to where they want to go more quickly.

🐕 Ignoring a cue might mean they're distracted, haven't fully understood what's being asked, or find something else more rewarding at that moment.

🐕 Guarding food, toys or resting places can be linked to feeling worried about losing something valuable, rather than trying to establish authority.

The important thing is to understand what's driving the behaviour, rather than just labelling it.

💙 Instead of asking, “How do I show my dog who's boss?”, try asking, “Why is my dog doing this, and how can I help them succeed?”

Understanding the reason behind a behaviour gives us a much better starting point for changing it. It also helps us build a relationship based on trust, clear communication and cooperation.

Our dogs don't need us to dominate them, they need us to understand and support them. 🐾
