Bringing home a new kitten? Take a look around first! 🏡🐾

Kittens are curious, determined little explorers - and they'll investigate places you probably wouldn't expect them to! Before your new arrival comes home, take a few minutes to kitten-proof your house.

Watch out for:
🧺 Washing machines & tumble dryers – always check inside before switching them on
🔥 Hot hobs, irons, radiators & storage heaters – curious paws can quickly get burnt
🚽 Open toilets, baths & garden ponds – kittens can fall in and may struggle to get out
🚪 Open windows, doors & chimneys – kittens can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps
🗄️ Cupboards, drawers & airing cupboards – always check before closing them
🔌 Electrical cables – chewing can cause serious injuries
🧵 String, wool, thread, needles & small toys – these can be swallowed and cause dangerous blockages
🪴 Houseplants – many are poisonous to cats, so check they're kitten-safe
🧪 Cleaning products, insecticides, w**d killers & other chemicals – keep these safely out of reach
💊 Human medicines – never give your kitten medication unless it has been prescribed by your vet

And don't forget the things they can walk through and then lick off their paws. Chemicals such as antifreeze, pesticides and some cleaning products can be extremely dangerous to cats.

A few simple checks before your kitten arrives can help make their new home a much safer place to explore ❤️

🐾 WE NEED YOUR CATS! 🐾

We’re heading to Cat Show Live this weekend, and we’re looking for some fabulous feline volunteers to join us on the GCCF stand! 😻

Please note that only cats already booked into the Cat Village at the Cat Show Live are eligible to attend and no new cats can be booked in.

On Saturday 12 September, we’ll be running five short talks and live demonstrations on stands P23 & P24 – and we need cats to help us bring them to life.

🐱 Any breed, any age
🐱 Pedigree or household pet
🐱 No show experience needed!

What matters most is a cat that’s relaxed and confident in a busy hall and happy to be admired.

Your cat would join us on the stand for just 5–10 minutes. You’ll stay with them throughout and handle them yourself. Visitors may meet and stroke your cat under your supervision, if you and your cat are comfortable with that.

We all know cats love to “help”... even when nobody asked them to! 😹🐾

Whether they’re sitting on your laptop while you’re trying to work, lying on the washing you’ve just folded, or taking up residence on the wrapping paper while you’re trying to wrap a present... they’re always ready to lend a paw! 🎁💻

Show us your cat “helping” with anything - we can’t wait to see what your little helper has been up to! 🐱🐾

As we head into Autumn, there are a few seasonal things around the home and garden that cat owners should keep an eye on 🍂

🌺 Flowers & bulbs – especially lilies, which are extremely toxic to cats, as well as bulbs such as daffodils and tulips.

🍄 Mushrooms & fungi – Autumn is prime mushroom season, so keep curious cats away from any growing in your garden.

🪴 Houseplants – as plants come indoors for the colder months, check they're safe for cats before putting them within reach.

🕯️ Candles & essential oils – those cosy Autumn scents aren't always cat-friendly. Some essential oils can be harmful to cats.

🧅 Autumn cooking – onions, garlic and other alliums are toxic to cats, so take care with scraps and ingredients.

🎃 Pumpkins & decorations – keep an eye on anything your cat might chew or swallow, particularly mouldy or spoiled decorations.

A little awareness can go a long way towards keeping our cats safe this autumn.
