We have had a grey female cat brought into us who arrived in a critical state. She is ear tipped and was found near Brymore academy. She is microchipped but we are having difficulty locating an owner. If you think she could be your cat please call on 01278 450080.

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! 🐱

Today we're celebrating our gorgeous ginger cats — but have you ever noticed that most ginger cats seem to be boys? There’s actually some fascinating genetics behind it!

A cat's ginger colouring is linked to a gene carried on the X chromosome.

🐾 Male cats have one X and one Y chromosome (XY).
They only need to inherit the ginger version of the gene on their single X chromosome to be ginger.

🐾 Female cats have two X chromosomes (XX).
To be fully ginger, they usually need to inherit the ginger version from both parents — one on each X chromosome.

That makes ginger boys much more common than ginger girls. Roughly 80% of ginger cats are male, although the exact proportion varies between cat populations.

And this same bit of genetics helps explain another feline colour curiosity: tortoiseshell and calico cats are overwhelmingly female! Their beautiful mix of ginger and non-ginger colouring results from having different colour versions of the gene on their two X chromosomes.

So while ginger girls might be less common, they absolutely do exist — and we're lucky enough to meet the occasional one in practice!

Of course, whatever their chromosomes, we think every little orange troublemaker deserves celebrating. 😻

🌈 Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 🌈

For many of us, losing a pet is like losing a member of the family. They leave paw prints on our hearts that never truly fade.

The words of the Rainbow Bridge have brought comfort to grieving pet owners for generations. For many years, the author was unknown, but it is now recognised that the original piece was written in 1959 by 19-year-old Scottish artist Edna Clyne-Rekhy after the heartbreaking loss of her beloved Labrador, Major. Encouraged by her mother to write down her feelings, Edna poured her grief onto a few pages from a notebook, never imagining that her deeply personal tribute would one day comfort millions of people around the world.

Whether the Rainbow Bridge is something you believe in or simply a beautiful symbol of the everlasting bond we share with our pets, its message continues to bring hope during one of life's hardest goodbyes.

Today, we'd love to honour the companions who are no longer by our side but will never be forgotten.

Today we're celebrating our four-legged best friends—the ones who greet us like we've been gone for years, even if it's only been five minutes.

Dogs have an incredible way of making life brighter. They get us out of bed on the toughest mornings, encourage us to explore the world one walk at a time, make us laugh when we need it most, and love us unconditionally through every high and low.

Not every toy should be left unattended!

Toys provide fantastic enrichment for our pets, but it's important to remember that not all of them are safe to leave with them unsupervised.

🐾 Damaged toys can break apart, creating a risk of swallowing small pieces.
🐾 Rope toys and long strings can become tangled around a pet's neck, potentially causing strangulation.
🐾 Squeakers, stuffing, strings and loose parts can be accidentally ingested, leading to potential choking or intestinal blockages.

This might sound a bit over the top, but there’s been a few cases in the media recently of cats and dogs unfortunately suffering fatal injuries when left with their toys unsupervised.

We just want to give you a few simple checks can help keep play time safe and fun.

Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI)

SCI has no known cause, but this is what we know so far:
🍁 Seasonal means it is most prevalent between August and November
🍁 Dogs fall ill roughly 1 - 3 days after a woodland walk
🍁 Symptoms may include vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, not eating and muscle tremors

SCI can be fatal and although the cause is currently
unknown, we focus on treating the symptoms and
most cases recover. If you suspect SCI or have any concerns, please ring us straight away on
